Job Description
Scope of Position:
As a member of an energetic Recreation team, you will provide recreational leadership and facilitation to participants at Norfolk County recreation programs for all ages, day camps and special events with responsibilities including program planning, program delivery, site and camper safety and administration; and supervising groups of 1 to 10 participants.
Through effective leadership and programming, this position enables children, youth, adults and families to develop skills, make friends, socialize and build self-esteem. Accountable for the wellbeing of participants under the guidance of the Recreation Coordinators, Community Programming, ensuring activities are safe, inclusive and high quality following the High Five model.
Position Description:
- Assists in keeping attendance records by promptly reporting absences to the appropriate Recreation Coordinator or Supervisor, Community Programs.
- Participates in the delivery of a range of recreation and active living program activities delivered through Norfolk County Recreation such as after school programming, sports, games, crafts, skill based after school programming, PA Day Camps, March Break Day Camp, Summer Day Camps, pickleball workshops, adult and seniors activities and special events. Helps to ensure programming is adapted to participants.
- Closely monitors participant conduct and applies applicable policies.
- Follows lesson plans provided by the Recreation Coordinators, Recreation Programmers or Supervisor, Community Programs.
- Assists with the service and clean-up of snacks when applicable. Prepares and organizes program equipment and supplies, reporting any inventory damage or shortages.
- Demonstrates the confidence and ability to make decisions independently of peers and in the best interests of the participants. Resolves problems and conflicts effectively as they arise.
- Prioritizes participant well-being, safety and protection throughout programs and special events. Evaluates situations of potential risks to the safety, protection and well-being of participants and staff, proactively taking mitigating actions to address such risks.
- Serves as a liaison with parents of participants (where applicable), reinforcing Norfolk County’s customer service, and diversity and inclusion (special needs, ethno-cultural, English as a second language, socio-economic).
- Follows Norfolk County policies and procedures in program activities.
- Maintains positive, constructive relationships with fellow staff and the public.
- Participates in orientation and training sessions.
- Other duties as required.
Requirements
Knowledge and Experience:
- High School- minimum of 15 years of age
- Must be currently enrolled in a secondary education institution or institution of higher learning and be returning to school at the next available term
- Standard First Aid with CPR Level C (if hired, must be obtained by start date)
- HIGH FIVE – Principles of Healthy Child Development; Principles in Action; Healthy Mind, Health Child (if hired, must be obtained within 2 months of start date)
- Experience working with children; knowledge of child development, crafts, sports, music and/or games; experience working with adults and seniors considered an asset
- Experience in a leadership capacity is required (i.e. student council member, leadership role on youth council)
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to prepare, facilitate and adapt program plans and activities on a daily basis
- Excellent customer service and time management skills
- Strong interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of the recreation programs offered by Norfolk County
- Ability to work in a team environment, follow verbal and written instructions, complete duties to an acceptable level of quantity and quality with minimal supervision, following all of Norfolk County Health and Safety Policies and Procedures
- Ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively
- Must be motivated, hardworking individual able to work outside in all weather (hot, dusty, cold and wet)
- Must be aware of safe work practices as they relate to job responsibilities and work environment, and have the basic understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
