With a focus on industry, government, academic partnerships, the researchers at the Institute for Chemicals & Fuels from Alternative Resources (ICFAR) are leaders in the development of technologies and processes for the production of chemicals and fuels from alternative resources, with an emphasis in environmental sustainability, and also supporting the petroleum industry.  The goal is to pave the way for Canadian bio-industrial resource innovations to get to the global marketplace.  

One primary area of research focus at ICFAR is the NSERC Industrial Research Chair (IRC), Thermochemical Conversion of Biomass and Waste to Bioindustrial Resources program, which involves 11 industry partners, plus NSERC and Western.  Prof. F. The Technical Specialist (Mechanical and Manufacturing Technologist) will apply their expertise and knowledge to support the research projects associated with NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Thermochemical Conversion of Biomass and Waste to Bioindustrial Resources, as well as other contract and government funded research led by the Director of the Institute for Chemicals & Fuels from Alternative Resources (ICFAR). More specifically, the role provides mechanical technology support including design, development, modification and manufacturing of equipment, tools or other parts required to support the research initiatives. The Technical Specialist also oversees research operations for the research group in the pilot plant laboratory, the secondary research facility (ICFAR B), and in the workshop, to ensure smooth equipment and facility operation, including safety and facility/equipment maintenance and supervision for the research group (including postdoctoral scholars, staff and faculty).

Qualifications

Education:
-   Mechanical/Manufacturing Technologist College Diploma or Trades Certificate 
-   Mechanical/Manufacturing Technologist College Diploma or Trades Certificate and an Undergraduate Degree in relevant field (such as Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics) is preferred


Experience:
-   4 years' experience working in a related academic research environment on multiple large and small-scale research projects
-   Experience in design, repair, modification, construction/manufacturing of equipment
-   Experience ensuring health and safety standards are adhered to in an industrial or pilot plant academic setting
-   Working experience in a machining, manufacturing, research, or laboratory setting is preferred


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
-   In-depth knowledge of research experimental design and analysis
-   Knowledge of manufacturing technology and familiarity with blueprints and technical drawings
-   Knowledge of, and experience with, electronics, including electronic prototyping (using Arduino software)
-   Knowledge of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) approval process
-   Communication skills to describe technical concepts effectively to both novice and sophisticated users and with an ability to write clear, concise and accurate procedural documentation
-   Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
-   Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate peak work periods and tight deadlines 
-   Advanced skills in software and other applications used to produce, support and analyze research outcomes (such as CAD and/or 3D modelling)
-   Excellent troubleshooting ability along with hands-on expertise in technical support
-   Strong organizational skills to assist with the successful completion of multiple projects simultaneously 
-   Proven ability and natural inclination to develop relationships by interacting with people in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
-   Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
-   Willingness and ability to ensure cleanliness of the facility (including performing lab floor cleaning)
-   Must have own transportation with ability to travel between Western Engineering and ICFAR facility; Valid Class G driver’s license required
