Summary of Duties:
Works under the direction of a Manager, Supervisor or designate. Performs the “Operator-in-charge” function, as defined by and in accordance with the Ontario Water Resources Act, Regulation 129/04 (as amended from time to time), for the plant(s) or specific processes as assigned. Supervises crew(s) of workers, and performs a variety of duties including maintenance repairs associated with wastewater treatment Plants and pumping stations.
Main Duties:
- Operates and maintains a wastewater treatment plant and pumping stations as the Operator in Charge as defined by the Ontario Water Resources Act, Regulation 129/04 (as amended from time to time).
- Directs and assists staff in all functions related to the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities and pumping stations.
- Arranges for replacement staff as required.
- Provides work direction and training to other staff, communicates related activities orally and in writing, including the preparation of reports, details of work completed and data logging.
- Operates a class “G” rated vehicle.
- Takes samples as required, makes standard tests, calculates, records and interprets results.
- Follows schedule of preventative maintenance and inspection and lubrication; maintains log book records, prepares written reports and forms.
- Uses hand and power tools and equipment such as shovels, mops, wrenches, drills, ladders, scaffolds, two way radio and telephones.
- Operates a fork lift or skid loader.
- Handles toxic and corrosive materials in a safe manner.
- Follow proper procedures such as lock-out tag-out and confined space entry.
- Perform minor repairs such as UV lamp changes. Perform flow & level checks.
- Follows established process operation and control parameters using a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and established requirements and objectives set out by local and provincial legislation.
- Cleans, services, and assists in maintaining equipment within the plant, buildings, and grounds.
- Assist in operating Springbank Dam, including the placing and removal of stop logs and flow control devices to control river levels.
- As assigned, performs related duties (including fire warden) which are transient, or of an emergency nature, or which are minor but recurring.

Educations Qualifications:
Successful completion of Grade 12 in the Province of Ontario or equivalent combination of education, training and experience, as per the requirements of the Ontario Water Resources Act, Regulation 129/04 (as amended from time to time) to achieve a Wastewater Treatment III license.
Specialized Training & Licenses:
- Must have and maintain a Wastewater Treatment Class III license and Wastewater Collection Class II license in accordance with the Ontario Water Resources Act, Regulation 129/04 (as amended from time to time).
- Thorough knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Regulations that apply to this work with emphasis on confined space entry, hygiene and industrial work practices.
- Thorough knowledge of appropriate City policies and procedures.
- Thorough working knowledge of SCADA system from an operation perspective.
- Ability to use a personal computer and the appropriate software packages including spreadsheets and word processing.
- Valid Class G Driver’s license.
- Current First aid/CPR Certificate or ability to obtain.
- Must be familiar with “lock our tag out” procedures and be familiar with basic electrical circuits.
- Must be able to work at heights, in confined space and around tanks of water.
Note: Shift work is required. On call/standby may be required.
Compensation and Other Information
$40.41 - $44.92 per hour
