Summary of Duties:
Reports to the Manager, Waste Diversion Programs. The student will work closely with the Planning Coordinator(s) and with the Waste Management team on a variety of responsibilities to support the City of London’s waste diversion programs and services.
The Waste Management Division is responsible for waste management planning and the day-to-day delivery of services, including operation of municipal facilities. In addition to providing support on the day-to-day services, the student will be assigned projects that will be completed within their work-term.
Work Performed:
The following duties are examples of the work.
Operations
- Conduct observational audits of how waste materials are set out (at the curbside or at multi-residential buildings) by residents
- Distribute information door to door to curbside households with program information and schedules.
- Conduct site visits to gather information and provide updates
- Manage inventory at storage facilities of collection containers (i.e. recycling containers, carts, kitchen containers, composters, additional parts, etc.)
- Transport inventory items from various locations
- Assist with keeping storage facilities organized, clean and tidy.
- Assist with day-to-day operations, such as but not limited to, replacement of containers, carts, and parts (handles, lids, information packages, etc.)
Research and data collection
- General observation, data collection and analysis from curbside audits, site visits, and events.
- Waste management technology/program research.

Community outreach and engagement
- Outreach activities to promote increased awareness and compliance with London's waste diversion programs
- Assist with the production of printed and other media to promote London's waste management services
- Assist with workshops, presentations and outreach events providing information
General:
- Report regularly to the Planning Coordinator(s) on work completed, including documenting work, outcomes and recommendations
- Respond to and investigate resident enquiries and complaints by email, in person and by phone
- Deliveries (printed materials, containers, carts, etc.)
- Other Waste Management duties, as assigned.
Qualifications:
Post-secondary or graduate student of Engineering, Engineering Technology, Environmental Science, Education, Geography, Media/Communications, Social Sciences, Humanities.
Must be a current student enrolled in full-time studies returning to school full-time September 2025 and/or require this placement to graduate from an academic program.
Experience:
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience with public outreach, customer service and community engagement an asset
- Experience and comfort presenting to large and small groups
- Demonstrates initiative and strong organizational skills, effectively prioritizing and managing multiple responsibilities
- Ability and willingness to work both independently and as part of a team
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Specialized Training & Licenses:
Ontario G Class License IS REQUIRED
Compensation & Other Information:
$22.44/hour.
This posting is for one (1) temporary full-time up to 4 month student position (May/June - September 2025).
The normal hours of work are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Work outside the normal hours will occur throughout the four-month term including early mornings, late afternoons, evenings, and weekends. Weekend work will be required; advance notice will be provided.
Work Arrangement: Hybrid. Minimum of 50% of the work is in office. Subject to change in accordance with business requirements.
