About Us

The Department of Sociology at Western seeks to foster and produce sociological research, to develop and enhance the research skills of our students, and to strive towards research excellence among all researchers in the department. Moreover, we seek to educate students at the graduate and undergraduate level, to teach them critical thinking and research skills, encourage them to think theoretically about social phenomena, and impart knowledge about social institutions, social processes, social relations, and various dimensions of social experience.


The Manager is a key member of the management team in Sociology, working closely with the Department Chair, Undergraduate and Graduate Chairs, and Centre Directors to lead the current and future direction of the Department. The Manager ensures the efficient and effective functioning of administrative, strategic, operational, and financial processes and procedures to achieve the department’s educational and research goals. The Manager is responsible for the development of the Department’s Strategic Plan and Operating Budget and leads their implementation to ensure successful alignment with the Faculty’s and Western’s strategic goals, while providing leadership, coaching, and mentorship to assist staff within the Department to achieve their expected outcomes. The Manager coordinates many of the Chair’s administrative responsibilities and ensures compliance with appropriate collective agreements and Western policies and procedures. The Manager also oversees all departmental finances relating to administration, research, both domestic and international, and endowments.


-    Undergraduate Degree in Business/Finance or a related field
-    Working towards or completion of a recognized financial/professional designation (e.g., CHRL, CHRP or CPA)
-    Master’s degree in Business/Finance or a related field is preferred

-    5 years’ experience in administration/operations, finance including previous budgeting, human resources, and implementation and operationalization of strategic planning, within a unionized environment
-    3-5 years leadership/supervisory experience    
-    Work experience in an academic and unionized environment preferred

-    Strong leadership and management skills with the ability to develop a shared vision to lead and coach employees to excellence
-    Results-oriented with the ability to motivate and coach employees to meet high performance standards, while working effectively as a member of the leadership team
-    Demonstrated advanced judgment, analytical, and problem-solving skills with a consultative and collaborative approach to addressing issues and opportunities
-    Critical thinking and discernment to assess and scope areas for improvement and an ability to offer creative solutions
-    Excellent verbal and written communication skills and confidence dealing with all levels of an organization with the ability to converse with, write reports for, and deliver presentations
-    Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook)
-    Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and professional development
-    Strong ability to analyze sizable amounts of detail/data with analytical skills in the areas of financial and business management to draft budget proposals, forecast expenses, and monitor relevant accounts
-    Demonstrated knowledge of financial budgeting, analysis and principles, Human Resources principles and practices, collective agreement language and interpretation, Employment Standards Act and other relevant legislation
-    Proven ability and natural inclination to interact with people in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
-    Strict sense of confidentiality
-    Proven ability to take initiative and in-depth knowledge of how to champion a project from conception through implementation and evaluation
-    Ability to handle diverse situations, multiple projects, and rapidly changing priorities
-    Experience in PeopleSoft HR and Finance, or other management/accounting software is preferred
