Position Summary

The Firearms and Property Coordinator interacts with members of the public and staff as it relates to the handling and recording of incoming and outgoing property and firearms. The position ensures accurate tracking, appropriate storage, and identification of firearms to assist in tracing.


Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the intake, processing, cataloguing, storage, and return of property (ammunition, firearms, money, bicycles, etc.) to members of the public.
  • Liaise with investigating officer to confirm property is eligible for return under procedure and handle the required paperwork for processing.
  • Respond to inquiries from the general public (victims of crime, accused, lawyers, etc.) through telephone, email, and in-person regarding status of property and use effective communication skills to explain if property cannot be released.
  • Schedule appointment with property owner and prepare the property for return.
  • Ensure safe storage and handling of firearms in compliance with procedures.
  • Verify Firearms as per training from the RCMP and enter all data into the Canadian Firearms Program computer system.
  • Complete firearms statistics charts to provide to Ministry of the Attorney General at year end.
  • Sign out property to investigators, complete the necessary paperwork and update on computer system.
  • Review property list authorized for disposal and confirm compliance with procedure.
  • Collect pertinent property and dispose of according to procedure.
  • Work with Sergeant to transport items to be disposed of to proper location (dump, donation centre, etc.) using a pickup truck with a lift.
  • Organize and maintain records of property slated for auction and periodically assist Sergeant with transporting items to auction location.
  • Ensure accuracy of information logged and the proper release of property according to procedure.
  • Other duties as assigned within the core competencies.
Requirements
  • Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 6-12 months’ experience in office administration, customer service, or a related field.
  • Successful completion of Firearms Safety Course and Firearms Verifiers Course (provided on-the-job).
  • Strong problem-solving skills where problems, situations and responsibilities are covered by standards, precedents, and procedures.
  • Effective communication skills required for regular contact with persons inside and outside the organization to give, obtain and/or exchange routine information or decisions requiring general discussion and explanation to ensure understanding which may not be accepted by the recipient.
Working Conditions
  • Continuous exposure to disagreeable conditions including dirt, noise, odours, bodily fluids, mold, drugs, and firearms.
Benefits/Pension:

Temporary members receive ten percent (10%) of their hourly rate in lieu of benefits (after 120 calendar days) and are also eligible to join the OMERS Pension Plan upon their first day of hire.

Hours of Duty:

Monday to Friday; 0730-1530hrs and 0800-1600hrs
