Report to:  
The Youth Outreach Worker will be an employee of the South London Neighbourhood Resource Centre (SLNRC).  Day-to-day supervision/consultation will be provided by the Manager of Neighbourhood Community Development Westminster & Youth Services in the form of formal supervision meetings as well as informal support as requested.    

Position overview:  
The Youth Outreach Worker will deliver a youth outreach and leadership program to prevent high-risk youth in the White Oaks and Westminster  communities from becoming involved in gun and gang activities. Activities will include peer mentorship, development of essential life skills, conflict resolution, and positive relationships. This program is targeted at 10 to 16 year olds.  

Commitment:
This position is a full time position for 37.5 hours per week that will include working into the evenings & weekends, from December 2023 to March 2026.  

Salary:  
$25.00 per hour with benefits after 3 month probation period.  

Objective of project:
  • Effectively address risk factors that may result in a young person engaging in gun and gang violence.  
Outcome:
  • Improved access to and availability of evidence-based gang and gun violence prevention and intervention programs for young people at risk of involvement in gun and gang violence.
  • Enhanced capacity of and collaboration between parents, families, community agencies, community members, etc. to support young people at risk of or involved in gun and gang violence. 
Metrics:  
  • 30 youth yearly report they feel empowered with knowledge, skills and resources necessary to resolve conflicts to prevent violence or gang-related activities
  • 60 youth, families, community members attending information sharing sessions regarding guns and gangs  

Responsibilities:
  • Empower youth between the ages of 10 and 16 through a comprehensive program designed to promote personal development, positive development, positive relationships & connections and community engagement.
  • This comprehensive program will run 2 cycles;  each having a duration of 12 weeks and includes: Life Skills, Relationship Building, Self-Confidence and Community Building
  • Each cycle ends with  an evening of friendship hosted by the youth for important people in their life
  • Information sharing sessions will be held 1-2 times per year for youth, families/caregivers and community members
  • Collaboration with:
    o local schools;  Westminster Secondary School, Regina Mundi and elementary schools, to ensure proper referrals to the program  
    o London Police Services; specifically the Diversity Team, to ensure that our conflict resolution and violence prevention workshops are aligned with their community safety initiatives to reduce the risk of youth involvement in criminal activities
    o youth support networks;  such as organizations that provide counseling and mental health services, to ensure that youth have access to a comprehensive support system that addresses their specific needs
    o SLNRC & NRAWP programs to integrate the youth for volunteering and employment opportunities.  
Qualifications:
  • Responsible, trustworthy, approachable and friendly
  • Capacity to build relationships with youth, families, community members, and professionals
  • Proven ability to work with diverse and ethnic/cultural backgrounds
  • Capacity to work independently as well as within a multidisciplinary team
  • Good organizational, time management and interpersonal skills 
  • Post secondary education in the Human Services Field (SSW, CYC, Recreation, Sociology, etc) or experience actively working in youth outreach and prevention programs
  • Valid G driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is required  
  • Clearance through a vulnerable populations police screening process  
  • Must have a valid social insurance number and eligible to work in Canada
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification
  • Current Safe Food Handling certification
