YMCA of Southwestern Ontario operates two overnight camps, one in Point Pelee National Park, and one on Beausoleil Island in Muskoka. Position: Language Skills Instructor - Supply
Location: London, Ontario (various sites)
Rate of Pay: $34.29 - $44.26 / hour
Start Date: September 8, 2025
Schedule: On-call supply for the following times:
• Monday – Friday 9:00 – 11:30; 12:30 – 3:00

In this role, you will:
• Follow YMCA of Southwestern Ontario policy and procedures
• Act as a YMCA ambassador, demonstrating YMCA core values in your daily work
• Provide language instruction to eligible adult newcomers in a continuous intake LINC setting. Classes may be either in-person, online, or in a blended format
• Create or select and adapt instructional materials appropriate to the CLB levels and needs of learners.
• Focus on language development by teaching practical skills that will prepare the student for everyday life in Canada, and the local community, with emphasis on the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as digital literacy skills (e.g. using a laptop, navigating online).
• Plan and deliver engaging, learner-centered lessons aligned with the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLBs) and the Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA) guidelines.
• Conduct ongoing needs assessments and support learners in setting personal language goals and reflecting on their progress.
• Set up, maintain, and facilitate effective use of the Avenue.ca Learning Management System to enhance student engagement and learning.
• Design and implement assessment tasks and maintain up-to-date ePortfolios as evidence of learner progress in alignment with PBLA standards.
• Organize in-class and out-of-class learning activities that strengthen language proficiency and support learner integration into the community.
• Maintain accurate daily attendance records and other administrative documentation as required.
• Submit regular theme reports outlining class objectives, resources used, challenges and successes.
• Monitor and document students' performance and progress using CLB and PBLA-informed tools.
• Assess students’ language proficiency and progress their CLB levels when appropriate in accordance with PBLA guidelines.
• Keep informed about current issues and regulations affecting newcomer learners.
• Maintain regular communication with the program manager and administrative staff to share class updates and support program operations.
• Participate in professional development activities, including the annual TESL Ontario Conference and PD opportunities arranged by program administrators.
• Participate in staff meetings and training sessions as scheduled.
• Collaborate with colleagues to share best practices, lesson materials, and instructional resources.
• Reach out to the PBLA Lead for training or support as needed and attend scheduled training if necessary.
• Refer to Settlement for all settlement-related needs of learners.
• Work in collaboration with all NCS departments.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Education and Skills Qualifications:
• University degree required; a degree in TESL, Education, Adult Education, or a related field is an asset.
• OCELT Certification (TESL Ontario) in good standing required.
• Knowledge of Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA) is an asset; prior experience implementing PBLA is preferred.
• Completion of CLB Bootcamp required. https://www.language.ca/workshopstraining/clb-bootcamp/
• A valid Canadian teaching certificate issued by a provincial ministry or institution is an asset.
• Standard First-Aid and CPR Certification is an asset.
• Strong digital skills; proficient with Microsoft Office and online learning platforms, with experience using learning management system (LMS) – familiarity with Avenue.ca is preferred.
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
• Excellent written, verbal communication, and presentation skills.
• Self-motivated with a demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
• Strong ability to build rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships with adult learners and colleagues.
• Must provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check for the Vulnerable Sector in accordance with Association policy
• Legally entitled to work in Canada
