Job Description

Summary of Duties

 

Reporting to the Supervisor of the Apparatus Division, the Mechanic is primarily accountable for performing customer service duties relating to the maintenance of Fire Services diesel powered fire apparatus fleet and gas powered light truck and car fleet; however, the incumbent will also be accountable for maintenance for various types of rescue equipment, small engine powered equipment, including ground maintenance equipment, all doing so in accordance with Corporate and Fire Services policies, Standard Operating Guidelines and standard practices in the Apparatus Division. The Mechanic will work in close cooperation with members of London Fire Department’s (LFD) Apparatus Division and Clerical Administrative Division to deliver high quality services to internal customers while ensuring that sensitive matters and restricted information are kept confidential.

 

Duties stated above are not necessarily exhaustive, and may be altered from time to time. Revisions or changes to ranks or job classifications will be made in accordance with Article 12.05 of the Collective Agreement.

 

Work Performed

 

The Mechanic, under the direction and coordination of the Supervisor of the Apparatus Division, shall:

 

General

 

Conduct all duties and activities in accordance with Corporate and LFD’s policies and Standard Operating Guidelines;

 

Report all unsafe conditions associated with equipment, or duties and activities;

 

Initiate timely evaluation, recommends and initiates corrective action related to unsafe or hazardous situations;

 

Work with all staff to promote and advance an environment and attitude of accident and injury prevention;

 

When directed, be involved with initiatives aimed at continually improving the quality of services provided by the Apparatus Division to internal customers, including but not limited to recommending quality objectives, processes and quality indicators;

 

Through participation in initiatives and/or committee work, the Mechanic supports the achievement of corporate goals and objectives by providing feedback and input as requested;

 

Complete reports and forms as required, including Work Orders, ensuring the content structure, and accuracy meets LFD standards, with respect to content, structure, accuracy and order in a legible and grammatically correct manner;

 

When directed, will assist the Supervisor and/or the Training Division to develop training programs related to safety and the proper use of equipment;

 

Ensure that all activities and duties performed meet the legislative requirements for and address all issues related to health and safety, and all other relevant legislation;

 

When directed, assist with the development of the divisional budget by identifying operational and capital needs associated with facilities maintenance;

 

Attend applicable education and training activities when scheduled and approved, noting that the individual may be away for up to one (1) week at a time and, in some cases, longer duration travel may be required as well as weekend departure;

 

Maintain confidentiality of all records and information; and

 

When so assigned based on a schedule established by the Supervisor be available for “on-call” duty;

 

Mechanic Duties

 

Use schematics, maintenance manuals or other related materials/mediums in the performance of their duties;

 

Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic issues related to fire apparatus, the light car and truck fleet, as well as the various systems associated with these vehicles, rescue equipment, small engine powered equipment, including grounds maintenance equipment;

 

Repair, as required, all mechanical, electrical, electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic deficiencies related to fire apparatus, the light car and truck fleet, as well as the various systems associated with these vehicles, rescue equipment, small engine powered equipment, including grounds maintenance equipment;

 

When scheduled, attend and successfully complete training in specialty areas such as, but not limited to, breathing compressors, self-contained breathing apparatus, etc.

 

If so directed, act in a backup capacity to other members in the Apparatus Division with respect to the maintenance of specialty equipment;

 

Fabricate parts using fabrication equipment such as plasma arc cutters, band saws, cut-off saws, lathes and mills;

 

Join steel, aluminum and stainless steel using MIG and TIG weld process;

 

Use mechanic hand and power tools, including hydraulic hoists, overhead hoists;

 

Use precision measuring instruments and computer diagnostic equipment; and

 

Oversee testing projects including but not limited to, hose testing.

 

Perform weekly generator tests at identified London Fire Department sites;

 

Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical issues associated with diesel and natural gas powered station electrical generators;

 

Qualifications/Experience

 

.At the time of application, employees must possess the following qualifications:

 

Valid 310T certification in the Province of Ontario;

 

Valid DZ driver’s license with air brake endorsement;

 

Minimum of seven (7) years current experience as a licensed diesel mechanic (310T);

 

Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills using various software;

 

Grade 12 diploma or equivalent;

 

Assets would include:

 

Valid 310S certification in the Province of Ontario;

 

College certificate as a Motive Power Technician;

 

Specialized Training & Licenses

 

Skills and abilities in the following areas are necessary:

 

Furthermore, during the hiring/assessment process, employees must successfully demonstrate the following capabilities:

Effectively interact with individuals within the Division, between Divisions, as well as Officers and Fire Fighters at the various stations;

 

Ability to work independently and as part of a team to effectively accomplish tasks to meet goals and objectives;

Possess excellent oral and written communication skills with ability to be clear and concise;

 

Perform and meet objectives in stressful situations and to modify approach and behaviour to deal with specific situations;

 

Problem solving skills that enable expeditious and accurate identification of issues related to mechanical, electrical, electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic systems;

 

Demonstrated experience and knowledge diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic systems;

 

Experience and knowledge diagnosing and repairing Cummins diesel engines and Allison automatic transmissions;

 

Ability to proficiently weld steel, aluminum and stainless steel using MIG and TIG welding process;

 

General ability to undertake basic fabrication using cut-off saw, lathe, milling machine;

 

A comprehensive understanding of fire services and related Standard Operational Guidelines and policies;

 

Effectively use all applicable Apparatus Division diagnostic computer software applications;

 

Research issues using the available mediums including, but not limited to, electronic and paper type repair manuals, Internet sites, interaction with suppliers and manufacturers, etc.; and

 

Disseminate and apply all applicable legislation, by-laws, codes, and standards and supplier maintenance and repair information

 

 

 

Compensation and Other Information

 

Compensation Range: $102,632 - $114,948
