Manufacturing Engineering Assembly Area Manager
The Manufacturing Engineering Area Manager is responsible for leading the manufacturing engineering team in developing the MBOM and work instructions and supporting the production line through managing scope, cost and schedule. This role collaborates with multiple functions including Engineering, Supply Chain, Program and Production to ensure the team delivers on commitments. The Manufacturing Engineering Area Manager ensures issues are resolved effectively, drives continuous improvement and aids in balancing and managing risk across departments.
Key Job Elements
- Lead manufacturing engineering program scope to achieve cost, schedule, deliveries, and performance requirements
- Lead manufacturing engineering team to resolve issues with deliverables and production line issues
- Lead manufacturing engineering team in design for manufacturing (DFM) reviews, developing oracle routings, standard hour calculations, MBOM creation and work instructions in line with budget and schedule constraints
- Meet regularly with engineering, supply chain and program to develop, monitor, and improve overall work status
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with internal/external stakeholders, ensuring effective lines of communication
- Manage risk elements associated with manufacturing engineering and elevate to appropriate stakeholders as required
- Participate in bid and proposal activities using a parametric bid approach based on historical actuals ensuring clear scope and consistent assumptions
- Create and process Baseline Change Requests (BCRs) based on cost, schedule and resource requirements for the manufacturing engineering team
- Own cost and schedule performance for manufacturing engineering efforts using Earned Value Management System (EVMS) practices, proactively identifying issues, developing recovery plans, and driving corrective actions
- Represent Manufacturing Engineering in customer and program meetings providing work status updates, as required
- Develop and deliver reporting/presentations to a variety of internal/external stakeholders
- Review monthly performance reports and take appropriate action, when required
Required Qualifications
- University degree or College diploma in Manufacturing/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or Skilled Trades license with 5-7 years equivalent experience
- Proven ability to lead and motivate people to achieve common objectives
- Demonstrated strength in managing relationships at all levels of an organization, both internal and external
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically and execute effectively to achieve short and long term objectives and ensure customer satisfaction
- Superior organizational skills with the ability to be agile, set priorities and multi-task under pressure
- Familiarity with various functional areas of the business
- Strong negotiation, oral, written, and presentation communication skills
- Experience in MS Office applications, including proficiency in PowerPoint and Excel
- Experience and understanding of GDLS-C standards, processes and metrics
- Ability to travel and possess/be able to acquire and maintain a valid passport
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Project Management Professional (PMP) designation
- Previous supervisory experience or experience leading teams
- Product knowledge and defence industry or military experience
- Experience creating or managing metrics or other performance reports
- EVMS and Bid-X experience

Physical Conditions and Hazards:
Production shop floor support employees are responsible for maintaining support for touch labour and as such may spend a significant time in the production environment.Production shop floor support employees may be exposed to loud noise, dust, weld fume, paint and extreme temperatures.
Production shop floor support employees may also assist the touch labour with the movement parts equipment as requested, this may include light lifting.In addition, Production shop floor support employees may be required to complete various administrative tasks depending on the job function
Computer based desk work is also required throughout the day.
Production shop floor support employees may be required to work shift work which may include rotation between day, afternoon, and night shifts. Additionally, overtime may be required on an as needed basis and may include weekend work.

The Manufacturing Engineering Assembly Area Manager opening is a current vacant position at General Dynamics Land Systems – Canada. The base salary hiring range for this position is $104,000 to $130,000 per year. Once in the role, successful candidates will have the opportunity to progress through the full salary range based on performance. This range reflects the base salary only and does not include additional components of our total compensation package, such as our incentive award program and other rewards like health benefits, employee profit-sharing, retirement savings, and more.
