Organization: Autism Ontario – West Region
Job Title: Program Support Staff
Salary:  $17.00/hr
Reports to: Program and Volunteer Coordinator, West Region
Hours: 3 hours per week (one weeknight per week), plus mandatory training
Contract Duration: 10 weeks (Fall 2022),  plus mandatory training
Start Date:  The 10 week program will launch in October 2022 and will conclude by December 2022.  The position start date will be in early to mid September to accommodate training and orientation


Overview of Position:
The Program Support Staff is responsible for working 1:1 or 1:2 with a variety of autistic teens in our West Region social recreation program held at our London, Ontario location. Program Support Staff report directly to the Program Coordinator and are responsible for ensuring safe, quality, and developmentally appropriate programming for program participants of all ages. Reporting and communication with parents/caregivers is also required.

Responsibilities:
  • Follows the planned program with his/her participant(s) making modifications based on specific needs including behavioural, physical, and developmental challenges
  • Support assigned program participant(s) during programming to ensure they are able to reach their full potential within the larger group
  • Use support tools available to ensure assigned program participants are able to reach their full potential during programs (i.e., timers, schedules, sensory room, etc.) 
  • Review assigned participants’ registration information and fully understand all information included
  • Assist volunteers with mild challenges, or communicate with Program Coordinator for assistance during greater then mild challenges
  • Responsible for the safety and security of staff and participants:
    • Follow Code of Conduct and Operational Policies of Autism Ontario
    • Follow all program procedures
    • Respond to first aid and emergency situations as required
    • Ensure that program areas are kept safe, clean and organized
    • Maintain health and safety standards at all times
    • Complete incident report forms when necessary with help of Program Coordinator
    • Maintain participant confidentiality
  • Maintain positive communication with families about the progress of the participants in their care
  • Work as a team member to resolve and prevent problems and maintain positive communication with all camp staff
  • Act as a role model for staff, volunteers and participants
  • Attend all training events, debriefings, staff meetings
  • Actively participate in all programming with participant
  • Full availability for assigned program
  • Ensure that program equipment and facilities are well maintained
  • Other duties as assigned

Regional Staff, Provincial Office Staff, Staff from other Regions.

Major External Contacts:
Participants, parents, local service providers, local professionals in the field of autism, and general public, volunteers, donors, sponsors, event participants.

Qualifications:                   
  • Experience supporting children and teens with ASD
  • Experience working with children in a school/camp/program environment is an asset
  • Current criminal reference check (obtained within the last six months)
  • Current First Aid and CPR-C an asset
  • Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Individual must be able to participate with high energy in all activities
