GKN Sinter Metals is the world's leading supplier of powder metal precision components. Our global production and sales network employs approximately 6,000 associates in more than 30 facilities on five continents. GKN Sinter Metals St. Thomas is currently recruiting for a Tool Room Supervisor.
Role Purpose: Responsible for supervision of tool room employees to support the production tooling schedule and some additional design functions where possible. Also responsible for the management all tool room functions including tooling budget, inventory, supplier management, etc.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervises the activities of all tool room employees including Tool Makers and Tool, Gauge, Inspect and Repair employees
- Ensures employees are adhering to all plant rules/regulations, policies and procedures and the Collective Bargaining Agreement and addresses with coaching, counseling and discipline if required.
- Ensures all employees are working safely and in adherence with Company required safety procedure/policies/rules, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Manages employee time and attendance using Company required systems. This includes authorizing time cards, managing/approving attendance, leaves of absences, etc.
- Maintains tooling inventory and budget.
- Coordinates with external tool shops, delivery date requirements for new and refurbished tooling to support the production schedule and sample build schedules while maintaining budgeted spending.
- Liaises with external tool suppliers on refurbishments and new tooling requirements.
- Liaises with Logistics to ensure tooling is available to support production schedules.
- Liaises with tool inspection and design on quality related tooling issues.
- Works with design and suppliers to improve life of tool items.
- Makes recommendations for improvements as it relates to tool design.
- Identifies and implements continuous improvement activities within the tool room environment.
- Identifies and implements continuous improvement activities within the Compaction and Sizing processes.
- Work cross-functionally with other areas including plant engineering, regional engineering, quality, tool shops, continuous improvement, and value streams
- Champion diversity and inclusion in line with Company guidelines
- Performs additional duties as assigned by Supervision.

- Participates in VA/VE activities and assist in cost reduction activities and design improvement
- Participates in BPE events as necessary
- Performs additional duties as assigned by Supervision.

- Uses Teamcenter for data management of product and tooling data
- Manages data transfer to and from tool shops within Teamcenter
- Manages data transfer between plants and regions within Teamcenter
- Performs other duties as assigned by Supervision
- Engineering degree or technical diploma.
- 3 years Supervisory experience in a tool room environment preferably Powder Metallurgy based.
- Previous budgetary control responsibility preferred. Must be capable of managing and maintain a budget to measure the planning and performance of the department
- Prefer a minimum of five (5) years of experience in the Powder Metal (PM) industry with exposure to a manufacturing environment using a lean, cellular, and reduced inventory production system
- Extensive skills in Product & tool design, CAD systems, Teamcenter PDM system, MPIF standards, and problem solving
- Computer literate with proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications
