Lifeguard - Fanshawe Conservation Area

Job Status: Seasonal Full-Time (Approximately June 17 – September 7, 2026)
Compensation: $22.62 (starting) to $27.71 per hour (plus 4% in vacation pay)
Number of Positions: 2 existing vacancies
Hours of Work: Up to 35 hours per week which will include days, afternoons, evenings, and weekends
Location: Fanshawe Conservation Area (Campground), London

The Lifeguard position is responsible for ensuring the safety of all visitors using the pool and splashpad at Fanshawe Conservation Area. This includes monitoring the pool and deck areas, promoting safe swimming practices, and responding to situations as required, in accordance with all applicable safety standards and legislation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform lifeguard duties for the swimming pool within the Conservation Area. This includes monitoring the pool and deck to ensure a safe environment.  Responsibilities also include administering swimming ability tests as required. No instruction or swim lessons are to be provided as part of this position.
  • Follow all established safety procedures and complete required documentation according to applicable legislation.
  • Arrive prepared before the pool opens, wearing the required uniform (guard shirt, whistle, bathing suit, rescue aid), and assist with preparing the pool area for opening.
  • Before opening each day, check that all required safety equipment is in place and meets regulatory standards.
  • Complete routine pool maintenance, including water testing, adding chemicals as needed, and vacuuming the pool.
  • Provide clear and respectful guidance to visitors about safe swimming and pool use.
  • Perform rescues and provide first aid/CPR when required.
  • Address unsafe behaviour and, when necessary, direct individuals to leave the pool area to maintain safety.
  • Keep the pool area clean by removing garbage and any hazardous items.
  • Be familiar with all emergency procedures and prepared to respond promptly.

Qualifications
  • Minimum Grade 12 education or equivalent is required.
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience working as a lifeguard in a pool setting.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact respectfully with a wide range of pool users.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision, as well as collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Ability to use sound judgement and problem-solving skills in lifeguarding, emergency, and first-aid situations.
  • Familiarity with outdoor pool operations, including basic water chemistry and safe handling of pool chemicals and equipment (training will be provided).
  • Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills.

 Certifications, Memberships, Licenses
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C – certification from a recognized provider (Lifesaving Society, Canadian Red Cross, St. John Ambulance, or Ski Patrol).
  • Current National Lifeguard (NLS) – Pool Option certification.
  • WHIMIS 2015 and additional swimming awards are considered assets.

Background Check Requirements
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a satisfactory police check and vulnerable persons check prior to commencement of employment.
