Research Technician (Histopathology)

Responsibilities

Reporting to the laboratory Principle Investigator (PI), the Research Technician will serve as the key laboratory histopathology technical resource. The role will provide support for a broad array of histopathology studies, including but not limited to undertaking basic tissue processing and immunohistological tissue staining, preparation of tissue slides for confocal microscopy and initial quality assurances, and performance of fluorescent in situ hybridization studies. The role will oversee all antibody and tissue processing inventories, ensuring that supplies are available in a timely manner and that all supplies are centrally collated and accessible. The role will oversee all tissue archives and inventories, ensure alignment of the laboratory’s existent tissue archive with the registry utilized by the “Dale E. Creighton Brain & BioBank for Neurodegenerative Dementia and Concussion” and ensure that existing inventories of paraffin-embedded tissues/slides are accurately recorded. Where necessary, the role will develop standard operating procedures that ensure compliance with all relevant Occupational Health and Safety standards. The role will provide technical expertise to all laboratory members, oversee the training of learners with respect to all aspects of histological evaluations, and, where appropriate, prepared histopathological images for the PI for their publications and/or grant purposes.

 

Qualifications

Education:

  • 3 year Community College Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology
  • Certification as a Histotechnician or Histotechnologist
  • Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) licensed with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists preferred

Experience:

  • 2 years of working experience as a Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician, Medical Laboratory Technologist, Histotechnician, or a Histotechnologist in a commercial or academic laboratory setting
  • Experience conducting research, providing guidance and overseeing the work of team members
  • Experience with all aspects of confocal microscopy

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to understand and apply policies, SOPs and instructions
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines and adapt to growth and change
  • Ability to write clear, concise procedural documentation and keep up to date inventories/records
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, follow through on work assignments and achieve results
  • Proven ability and natural inclination to interact with people in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and set appropriate priorities in a fast- paced setting
  • Ability to work well under pressure and use good judgment in assessing difficult situations
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of the job (perform repetitive tasks, good manual dexterity and eyesight)
  • Ability and willingness to stay abreast of technological developments
  • Intermediate computer skills required in Microsoft Office including spreadsheet design, work processing and database management
