Responsibilities

Western is striving to ensure that our community, campus, programs, research, outreach, and self-representation will be more inclusive. The Accessibility Specialist will play a vital role in the development and implementation of initiatives and projects that enhance accessibility across campus. The role will manage projects that focus on supporting and promoting accessibility and on ensuring that individuals have equitable access to services and facilities. The Accessibility Specialist will also manage the consultation and development of a comprehensive project plan, which accounts for all recommendations contained in the Postsecondary Education Standards Development Committee report and will manage its implementation.

Qualifications

Education:
  • Undergraduate Degree
  • Courses taken or certificate in Project/Change Management 
  • PMP Designation is preferred
Experience:
  • 5 years’ experience managing complex enterprise-wide projects in accessibility
  • Project management experience working in the higher education sector would be an asset
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • In-depth knowledge of legislation, regulations, and standards related to accessibility and accommodations for persons with disabilities
  • Expertise in Universal Design for Learning and accessible education 
  • Project management skills to align projects with strategic goals and operational objectives, ensure team roles are clear, milestones are communicated, and deadlines are met
  • Communication skills with the ability to converse with, write reports for, and deliver presentations to all levels of the organization
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple activities that are accurate and thorough, sometimes of a complex nature 
  • Ability to collaborate across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes and support work beyond one's own unit
  • In-depth knowledge of techniques for planning, managing and coordinating projects that involve a variety of stakeholders 
  • Knowledge of common project obstacles and necessary controls and contingency plans that will help address them
  • Ability to draw on diversity of skills, backgrounds and knowledge of people to achieve more effective results
  • Ability and willingness to employ a consultative and collaborative approach to addressing issues and making decisions
  • Professional manner, tact, diplomacy and discretion in dealing with various stakeholders and colleagues, including senior management
  • Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
