About HSLM 

HSLM is a charitable organization whose mission is to lead London and Middlesex in building a humane and compassionate community for all animals.  We improve the lives of animals in our community by providing shelter, education, and advocate for animals.  HSLM supports all animals, and specifically in the City of London and the Counties of Elgin, Middlesex, and Oxford.  

We are currently looking for an Adoption Counsellor to join our team.

Reporting to the Shelter Supervisor, the Adoption Counsellor performs duties related to the surrender and adoption of all animals for the shelter.  The Adoption Counsellor will be required to provide excellent customer service, while performing duties such as but not limited to adoptions, surrenders and intake of animals. As part of the Adoption Counsellor team, you will support your team and duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Assist animals in our care in finding their forever home.
  • Meet with members of the general public related to animal surrenders and adoptions in and outside the shelter.
  • Responsible for performing duties in a professional, proactive manner in order to achieve and maintain good public relations and excellent customer service.
  • Must be familiar with and supportive of the goals and mission of HSLM.
  • Help maintain standards of care based on shelter policies and protocols.
  • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations.
  • Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 lbs.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of a variety of animals, animal behaviour and their care requirements, ideally in a kennel environment is an asset.
  • Exceptional verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to share information and feedback.
  • Independent hard worker who takes initiative and is able to work independently and at the same time be a team player.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and adapt to change using strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Must not have allergies limiting or affecting exposure to animals.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • The ability to have fun while working hard is a must.
  • A genuine affinity for animals and the benefits of animal adoption.

Essential duties and working conditions

  • Must be able to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays.
  • Employment is conditional upon maintaining a valid Ontario Driver’s License and reliable transportation with the ability to travel occasionally.
  • Employment is conditional upon the ability to work around all species of animals safely.
