ABOUT THIS POSITION
 

Digital Extremes is currently seeking a Principal Weapons Artist (NOC 5241) to join our team. You will be responsible for creating not only weapons, but cosmetic items such as armor and capes, skins, and sometimes even spaceships for Warframe. This is a fast-paced job with a lot of room for creative expression. The incumbent will be able to use software they are comfortable with to create deliverables, with Zbrush and Substance Painter knowledge among the most useful. Hard surface modeling experience is not required but will be valuable in some situations. 3+ years of industry experience with PBR-standard asset creation is expected.

Warframe’s weapons and cosmetics are made in a variety of styles that share common elements, and the ability to adapt to all of these styles is critical to this role. A creative mindset with a strong traditional arts background will be greatly beneficial to this process. Drawing skills are a preferred extra as the ability to create concept art is valuable for this team. 

 
RESPONSIBILITIES 
 
Digital Extremes Ltd. (250 York St., Suite 100, London, ON N6A 6K2) seeks Principal Weapons Artist (NOC 5241) to perform the following duties: 
 
  • Work with the Lead Artist to create AAA-standard assets with PBR-standard materials;
  • Adapt style and workflow to the many factions within Warframe, and other future art styles;
  • Flexibility to move easily between art creation styles and learn new tools;
  • Work under the creative guidance of the Art Director;
  • Deliver work on time and according to schedule as prepared by the Art Director;
  • Work well from provided concept art and/or basic blockout volumes;
  • Quick and predictable, high quality work output with minimal guidance;
  • Work well in a cooperative, team-oriented environment;
  • Creation of hi and low poly models, textures, and materials for use as real-time game assets;
  • Developing block in, high and low poly, multi-part baking, PBR texturing digital images;
  • Creating sub-d modeling and hard surface sculpting;
  • Creating different scales and subject matter for weapons, vehicles, costumes, etc.;
  • Applying digital modeling techniques for use in creating complex mechanical objects, such as, weapons and vehicles;
  • Creating light, shade, color, and detail in creating texture maps and materials;
  • Multitask effectively, prioritize competing demands, and follow through on details;
  • Support and mentor other artists who are less experienced and require more direction.
 
REQUIREMENTS
 
  • University degree in visual arts with specialization in graphic design, commercial art, graphic communications or cartooning OR completion of a college diploma program in graphic arts , OR equivalent game development experience
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in game development modeling and texturing weapons, equipment/props, or vehicles using Maya/Max/Blender, ZBrush/Mudbox, and Substance Painter. Experience working within a game engine.
  • Exceptional knowledge of the asset creation process (block in, high and low poly, multi part baking, PBR texturing, etc).
  • Excellent skill at sub-d modeling and hard surface sculpting.
  • Flexible skills that translate to different scales and subject matter (weapons, vehicles, costumes, etc).
  • Ingrained sense of the principals of design and how to apply them to your models and textures.
  • Self-motivated, good communication skills and the ability to integrate into a tight knit team.
  • An exceptional understanding of digital sculpting and/or hard surface modeling techniques for use in creating complex mechanical objects, such as, weapons and vehicles.
  • Superior eye for light, shade, color, and detail in creating texture maps and materials.
  • Self-motivation, good communication skills, and a great team-player attitude.
  • A strong understanding of AAA standards PBR and high/low poly asset creation methods is expected.
 
PREFERRED EXTRAS:
 
  • Have shipped AAA PC or console titles as a 3D Artist specializing in equipment/props, weapons, or vehicles.
  • Experience in creating mechanical characters, monsters/creatures, and vehicles.
  • Skill in one or more related disciplines – illustration, animation, visual effects, or technical art. 
  • Ability to create basic concept art to then take to completed asset, or flesh in further to hand off to other team members.
