Our automotive manufacturing facility in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada is currently recruiting for an Engineering Manager. Details of the position are outlined below.


Role Purpose:  Manages all activities of the plant engineering department and represents engineering as part of the plant management team.

Role Reports to:    Plant Manager

 
Matrix Reports to: Director of Engineering

  

Key Responsibilities:
  • Significant experience with volume production processes including casting, extruding, powder metal, injection molding, precision machining, sheet metal fabrication, and welding.
  • Thorough knowledge of various materials and secondary coatings
  • Experience with QFD, Design and Process FMEA’s Responsibility and authority for establishment of all process standards and their control as well as development of capable processes including powder selection and development, tool design, compacting technology, sintering, and secondary processing.

 

 Process Engineering:

Ensure process specifications are set correctly for all operations (including machining and grinding) in order to meet customers specification. Identify process variables and develop processing conditions to control these variables in order to meet the above.

    • Represent Engineering Team in the Plant Management Team
    • Manage local Engineering information; ensure product is current and at current revision & manage Engineering IP
    • Accountable for reviewing and approving costing for potential new products and projects
    • Participate in tool design and dimensional change analysis
    • Support Capacity Analysis for New Business
    • Manage APQP engineering activities and manage product risk
    • Assist in the creation of the site industrial plan and manage its execution
    • Support both the local and global Key Process Indicators (KPI)
    • Oversee the design and execution of experiments for process development, maintenance, improvement and optimization
    • Support new product development as necessary
    • Develop and maintain a detailed execution plan including project schedule, resource usage, milestones and deliverables;
    • Identify risks involved and mitigation strategy;
    • Provide regular status reports and reviews to Management;
    • Perform testing to evaluate the proposed design solutions;
    • Verify changes and their impact at a sub-system level and system level then provide Management with results and analysis;
    • Perform design modifications and updates on products, once product re-design strategy approved;
    • Develop and implement prototype test strategy, test plans and criteria for acceptance/rejection.
  • People Management
    • Manage and direct Engineering Team at local site
    • Promote teamwork with cross functional areas including quality, sales, and continuous improvement
    • Complete required personnel reviews in a timely manner
    • Lead in the development, coaching, and execution of training activities for the Engineering Team
    • Champion diversity and inclusion in line with Company guidelines
       
  • Continuous Improvement
    • Generate a culture that fosters continuous improvement and removes waste
    • Implement cost reductions and productivity improvements. Play active role in all LEAN and Continuous Improvement activities, utilize lean techniques to re-engineer facility layout
    •  
    • Participate in VA/VE activities and  assist in cost reduction activities and design improvement
  • Capital
    • Prepare CAPEX requests and white papers for engineering capital
    • Lead in the planning and plant preparation for incoming equipment
       
  • Quality
    • Participate in root cause analysis of customer concerns
    • Assist in the Cost of Non-Quality reduction and in the Defective Material Report System
  • Customers
    • Represent GKN at Customers and at local site
    • Build Brand awareness
    • Perform other duties as assigned by Management

 

 

Other key internal relationships: 

Plant Management Team, Regional and Global Engineering, Regional Sales Team

 

Formal qualifications required: 

  • Bachelors Degree in engineering discipline or equivalent experience (minimum 10 years industry experience)
  • Minimum ten (10) years of experience in the Powder Metal (PM) industry with exposure to a manufacturing environment using a lean, cellular, and reduced inventory production system
  • Minimum five (5) years as an Engineering Manager
  • Scale-up experience in a production environment both in Canada and in international production environments.
  • Proficiency in manufacturing and process engineering system development, automotive quality systems, ISO/TS/QS International Quality Standards, MPIF standards, and problem solving
  • Extensive knowledge of PM manufacturing processes including compacting, sintering, metallurgy, sizing isostatic pressing, hot pressing, SPS, and powder and mechanical property characterization.
  • Computer literate with advanced skills in CAD and all Microsoft Office applications
  • Working knowledge of statistical techniques, data analysis and root cause analysis tools

Compensation:

  • Wage range and details: $114,500 to $125,000; merit increases are reviewed yearly and are based on performance; incumbent may be eligible to participate in a Management Incentive Plan which could provide a bonus of up to 18% of current salary.

The Company also offers a defined contribution pension plan with a 3% gift and a maximum 3% match based on employee contributions to the plan.
