Job Description

The Chef Assistant / Instructor is a key position within our Local Food Skills program with additional responsibilities related to catering, growing food and other skills development provided by the organization. 
Primary activities of this position include working jointly with the Program Manager/Chef to deliver all facets of the 3 week Local Food Skills program (see below) classroom instruction/facilitation and catering.
  •  Instruct program participants in culinary fundamentals – culinary terminology, cooking methods, knife skills, kitchen hygiene and kitchen safety.
  • Instruct program participants in all aspects of service styles – including banquet service and fine table service.
  • Work with the participants as the program concludes with a community attended dinner that is prepared and served by the students.
  • Act as a team leader with program participants, clients and community partners in the development and delivery of food related community events and initiatives.
  • Cleaning and maintenance of the commercial kitchen.
  • As part of the staff team, plant, maintain, harvest food from the organization’s ecological garden.
  • Research and contribute to the development of new components of the Local Food Skills program.
  • Engage in social enterprise activities that require the applicant to meet and maintain the organization’s established business standards.
  • As required in collaboration with the Chef/Program Manager act as lead and key contact for the organization’s catering business.
  • Attend and provide key event management and culinary support at catered events
  • Attending program and organizational meetings as required.
Hours of work: Typically Monday – Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm. This position periodically will require the employee to work outside of the regular hours but to not exceed 37.5 hours per week
This is a permanent salaried position with benefits.

The Ideal Candidate: 
Will be an experienced professional with a passion for the food industry and a keen interest in people, food and education. You will have culinary experience and a range of front of house service experience/expertise including fine dining and have facilitation and training skills or a career interest in the development of these skills. 

A clear and confident communicator you will able to speak to the career opportunities for people in the broader food sector. Possess strong communication and leadership skills and have interest in teaching and participatory learning environments.  You will have a passionate interest in growing and producing local sustainable food. The position requires a solid understanding of culinary terminology, cooking methods, knife skills, kitchen hygiene, and practical experience in restaurant environments and catered events. 
A desire/ability to assist and encourage participants to fulfill their employment/career goals through leadership and positive work ethic would be a key asset for this position.
