The Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc is currently accepting applications for one (1) full-time, temporary 12-month “GIS Technician / Planning Assistant.” This role is expected to start between January and February 2026.
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Manager of Growth and Development, the GIS Technician / Planning Assistant is responsible for the preparation of a variety of graphic and mapping projects to all municipal departments and the creation and maintenance of certain in-house digital mapping / GIS projects. In addition, the position provides confidential administrative support to building, by-law, and planning staff in processing and maintaining building and planning act applications.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Convert existing drawings, sketches and records into a digital form and integrate the converted records, survey and CAD data together with associated attribute data into a central spatial database repository using prescribed methods and forms.
- Prepare graphics, reports and derived mapping products from central data repositories or from an assembly of disparate data sets using digital methods.
- Retrieve, assemble and collate information (e.g. locations of sewers, water, parcels) from in-house records and transmit this information electronically, orally or in writing to inquiring public or staff, as required.
- Make basic trigonometric calculations for verifying and augmenting survey measurements and perform calculations for area, curves, frontage, and other data relating to surveys and plans as required.
- Source, acquire and collect data points for variety of mapping projects, both from internal data sources and via field retrieval.
- Maintain building permit dashboard and develop and maintain planning application dashboard.
- Support various municipal departments by delivering GIS services, including map and graphic production, asset data maintenance, and related GIS tasks.
- Preparation and coordination with emergency services and other stakeholders for all new municipal 911 addressing.
- Respond to counter / phone and email inquiries regarding building and planning matters and directing inquiries as required.
- Planning pre-consultation meeting minute taking and distributing
- Assist in processing and management of various planning applications and preparation of reports and public notices
- Assist in the coordination and liaison with other Municipal departments on planning related matters
- Assist in the preparation of a variety of performance measure reports, application and quarterly and annual reports
- Assist with graphic design, website development, social media communications
- Research, statistical analysis, report writing in support of Departmental activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- College Diploma or University Degree in a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) or related program.
- One (1) year experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) preferably using the ESRI GIS platform in a municipal environment.
- Demonstrated proficiency in reading and interpreting Engineering, Architectural, Topographic and Survey plan types and their associated accuracies and coordinate systems.
- Proficiency in computer software such as computer assisted design (CAD), graphic design, and database and file management software.
- Computer literacy utilizing the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and virtual meeting platforms
- Understands and works within the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations, and any Municipal policies and procedures.
- Sound judgment and professional tact to gain cooperation and compliance from the general public, contractors, and industry professionals
- Must be self-motivated, work with minimal supervision, be prepared to train the use of new software
- Demonstrated organizational and prioritization skills
- Demonstrated excellent customer service, communication and interpersonal skills
- Working knowledge of the Planning Act and planning related legislation and policies
- Must have a valid class “G” Ontario Driver’s licence with a satisfactory driver’s abstract
- A satisfactory Criminal Record Check prior to starting employment
Compensation:
Wage: Band 4 – $58,676.80 to $73,346.00 per year (2025 rates)
