Summary of Duties

Under the direction of the Manager Employment Strategies or designate, the intern will will work closely with the Social Services Employment team. The Employment team is developing a RFP for 2018 which requires research both internally and externally. The intern will support the RFP preparation by: conducting research (including a literature review, best practice review and environmental scan) to assist in reviewing the current Purchase of Service (POS) framework and in creating recommendations for changes to this framework.

Work Performed

  • Conduct a literature review in order to update existing 2012 review
  • Identify municipalities who utilize a purchase of service model and identify what effective and innovative strategies they are utilizing
  • Research innovative OW employment supports and programming including outcomes for specific audiences - new Canadians, youth, persons who have been on OW for long periods of time, generational poverty
  • Collect data on innovative programs, focussing on programs with specific target audiences
  • Summarize findings in a report that offers the RFP current context and content
  • Research trends in Employment supports
  • Assist in focus groups - collect data, note taking and observations, theme analysis
  • Work independently however in collaboration with a team
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary graduate from a social science or related discipline which includes research and evaluation methods.
  • Interest in creative approaches to employment strategies, engagement and motivation strategies, system change and poverty reduction strategies.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision (although guidance and support are included). Work will also be in collaboration with other team members
  • Strong communication skills and ability to engage with others; strong verbal skills in investigating, interviewing, asking questions;
  • Strong communication skills (able to write effective reports including summarizing and communicating large amount of information and data)
  • Competent computer skills including Word and Powerpoint and online survey software

 

Eligibility under the City of London Internship Program as follows (see below):

MUST MEET CRITERIA AS EITHER A NEW IMMIGRANT, PERSON WITH SELFDECLARED DISABILITY WHICH POSES EMPLOYMENT BARRIERS OR RECENT LOCAL POSTSECONDARY GRADUATE.

New immigrant:

  • New to Canada within the past 3 years, and
  • Graduate of a recognized post-secondary education institute with Canadian equivalency, and
  • English benchmark level 6 or above, and Connected with an academic or employment support agency, and
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.

OR

Person with self-declared disability which poses employment barriers:

  • Limited work experience in their chosen field, and
  • Graduate of a recognized post-secondary education institute, and
  • Connected with an academic or employment support agency.

OR

Recent local post-secondary graduate:

  • London resident who has graduated from a recognized post-secondary education institute within the past year and has limited work experience in their chosen field,

OR

  • Graduate of a London area recognized post-secondary education institute within the past year, but not currently living in London
  • Limited work experience in their chosen field.

Specialized Training and Licenses

  • Experience or specific knowledge of employment and career development strategies including motivation interviews.
  • Experience with research techniques and methodology
  • Experience with evaluation frameworks, outcomes and measures
  • Report writing experience
  • Experience working with teams

Compensation Range

$15.54

Other Information

Term is for the Fall/ Winter 2017 (Up to 15 weeks).
