JOB SUMMARY

As a member of the R&D team, the role holder will be expected to support and lead internal R&D activities to ensure that programs and projects meet the necessary technical requirements and are delivered to cost and on schedule.

Successful candidates will take part in the development of cutting-edge protection systems employed by Military and Law Enforcement users, both for personal protection (near-term examples include body armour plates, ballistic shields. and ballistic helmets) as well as ballistic and blast protection for vehicle platforms.

This involvement will span the complete product development cycle, from inception and concept definition, through design, prototyping, verification (testing) and production.

JOB DUTIES
  • Generating designs for new and next generation products, including
    • CAD
    • Material selection
    • Defining processing parameters
    • Tooling
    • Drafting 
  • Developing specifications and test programmes, analysis and interpretation of test result data and the creation and delivery of reports to internal colleagues and external customers.
    • Defining and executing product development plans, statements of work and program budgets
  • Support of design reviews and ensuring verification and validation activities are demonstrated and documented.
  • Technical support to the Design, Development, Quality and Manufacturing Engineering teams for proposed designs.  
  • Undertake problem solving of design and product issues to resolve functional issues as they arise throughout the development and service life cycle.
  • Support the developmental component manufacture and providing schematics, CNC programming, manufacturing documentation / guidelines, hands on manufacturing support and training. 
  • Developing specifications and test programmes, analysis and interpretation of test result data and the creation and delivery of reports to internal colleagues and external customers.
  • Running and/or supporting verification and validation activities including internal and customer funded trials.
  • Support of the marketing and sales part of the business to introduce new products to the market

EXPERIENCE
Essential
  • Degree or equivalent (i.e. diploma or experience) in an appropriate Mechanical Engineering or similar subject.
  • Previous experience working on design and development projects, inception to launch, within an engineer to order technical environment. 
  • Proficient with the use of 3D CAD modelling and design software.
  • Understanding of engineering drawings and design standards including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, ideally to automotive / defence requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively on a technical level with both peer and management groups and customers.
  • An effective and credible personal style engaging with internal and external customers and suppliers.
  • Experience working with Composite materials.
  • Proficient user of MS office software.
  • Familiar with configuration control and change management processes
  • Eligible for Security clearance
Desirable
Experience in the following areas:
  • Tooling design and design for manufacturability.
  • Composite compression moulding, injection moulding etc.
  • Jig and Fixture Design for assembly and machining
  • Materials testing
    • DoE (design of Experiment)
    • Analysis of materials test results
  • Working with and to ballistic test specifications.
    • Body Armour
    • Helmets
    • Vehicle Armour
  • The use of PTC Creo, Simulate and Windchill PDM.
  • The compilation of FMEA’s, DVP&R documentation, SRDs & SoWs
BENEFITS
  • Base salary $75,000k - $95,000k (subject to experience)
  • 40 hrs per week (Mon to Fri) based on-site with potential hybrid working available. Regular travel to UK and USA.
