Western Engineering's Research Office contributes to the identification, development and realization of the Strategic Research Priorities of the Faculty by setting Faculty research policy and strategic direction and providing leadership in setting academic direction. The Research Office provides regular updates on research successes at quarterly Faculty Council meetings and compiles statistical information and other data that will facilitate the promotion of research at Western Engineering.

The Research Officer supports the Associate Dean, Research in the Faculty of Engineering in the administration and effective management of the research portfolio.  The ultimate goal is to achieve recognition at a local, national and international level as a research intensive Faculty.  The incumbent will work to increase research funding with an emphasis on tri-council funding, including industry-related NSERC funding, as well as research contract income from technical transfer activities.  The Research Officer works directly with faculty members to develop and/or improve their grant applications, and connect them to industry to capitalize on NSERC funding available for faculty members who have industry support. 

In collaboration, the Research Officer will assist with the development of both short and long term strategic plans that are aligned with the Faculty of Engineering Strategic Plan and the University Research Strategic Plan.  The incumbent will also facilitate the implementation of the research components of the strategic plan.

Education:
-   University Undergraduate Degree; in Engineering or Science preferred

Experience:
-   5 years' experience working in a university or post-secondary academic environment,  liaising with faculty, researchers and external industry partners
-   3 years' experience in a science-related Faculty with exposure to grant-funded multi-disciplinary research projects preferred

Skills & Expertise:
-   Familiarity and knowledge of Western Policies and Procedures relating to research and policies and procedures regarding intellectual property, copyright and patents
-   Familiarity with the Occupational Health & Safety Act is a strong asset
-   Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural team environment
-   Creative problem-solving skills and sound professional judgment, especially regarding confidential/sensitive matters
-   Influential interpersonal skills that build positive and strong relationships at all levels of the organization and with external agencies
-   Ability to work independently, with a reputation for resourcefulness and a strong sense of accountability and initiative
-   Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office, including spreadsheet design, work processing and database management
-   Basic computer skills in social media and web design programs
-   Basic understanding of financial statements
-   Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the Faculty and University's events and activities
-   Advanced ability to effectively communicate (orally and in writing), lead business discussions and train others
-   Demonstrated ability to complete detailed analytics and reports
-   Strong attention to detail and proofreading abilities with an excellent command of the English language
-   Well-developed public speaking and presentation skills
-   Ability to understand researchers needs and expectations and provide excellent customer service directly and indirectly to satisfy expectations
-   Excellent time management and organizational skills to anticipate, plan and balance multiple priorities with many interruptions
-   Ability to meet deadlines & maintain accuracy while managing multiple projects efficiently
