Role:

Reporting to the Manager, Neighbourhood Development and Support, the Neighbourhood Program Assistant – Gardens and Activations is responsible for providing support to programs and supports provided by the Neighbourhood Development and Support team, including the London Community Gardens program and neighbourhood park activations. This casual position works as part of a team indoors and outdoors helping to enhance London neighbourhoods through engagement and community connections.

Job Responsibilities

  • Support, liaise with and communicate effectively with residents, neighbourhood groups, and City of London staff.
  • Visit community garden sites on a regular basis, complete routine checks, and work with Neighbourhood Development and Support and Parks Operations to ensure gardens are operational and well-maintained throughout the season. 
  • Support the registration, orientation, and closing processes for gardens.
  • Assist event organizers, residents, neighbourhood groups, and City of London staff to support successful events and activations in municipal owned spaces, including set-up and tear-down.
  • Respond to email and phone communications in a thoughtful and timely manner.
  • Keep accurate and detailed records.
  • Attend evening and weekend functions/events, as required.
  • Ensure all City of London policies and practices are followed.
  • Demonstrate commitment to anti-racism, anti-oppression, and human rights through practices and interactions with community partners, employees and individuals and support programs and initiatives that reflect this commitment. 
  • Demonstrate commitment and adherence to Health and Safety legislation and programs; actively promote a culture of safety.
  • Perform other duties as guided by the Coordinator, Community Plans and Programs and the Manager, Neighborhood Development and Support.

Qualifications:

  • Successfully completed (or in progress of completing) a university degree or community college diploma in horticulture, social sciences, community development, social work, recreation or a related field. Lived community experience will be considered.
  • Standard First Aid/CPR required (prior to the start of employment).
  • Vulnerable Sector Police Check (VSPC) (prior to the start of employment).
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to use a vehicle to travel to various work locations and transport supplies and equipment that may require heavy lifting. 
  • Interest in gardening and willingness to learn about urban gardening practices. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build positive relationships. 
  • Experience with community engagement, outreach, or event support. 
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve and escalate issues appropriately. 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. 
  • Customer service experience. 
  • Technical proficiency in Microsoft Teams and Office programs; confidence using digital tools. 
  • Motivated self-starter with a willingness to take initiative. 
  • Ability to manage conflict respectfully and professionally. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and creating welcoming community spaces. 
  • Creative, confident, and enthusiastic.

  • Hybrid role. Must have the ability to complete focused work at home.
