Job Description

The London Chamber of Commerce (Chamber) is a politically independent, membership based, volunteer driven, not-for-profit organization whose mission is to lead and serve the London business community.


Mission
To empower, connect and advocate for business across the London Region.

Position Summary
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is responsible for upholding and fulfilling the mission of the Chamber and is responsible for providing leadership and direction in support of the mission of the organization.
The CEO will be responsible for the implementation of the strategic plan; enhancing member programs and events to ensure the organization remains contemporary and relevant; developing business plans that will ensure the ongoing financial health of the organization; ensuring that the Board’s programs are well managed within the framework of their agreed objectives and drive outstanding value for the membership.

Key Responsibilities

Board Accountability and Support
  • Work closely with the Board of Directors in the determination of policy and strategy and support the Board in the fulfillment of their governance responsibilities.
  • Formulate alternatives for consideration by the Board to ensure that the organization’s goals and objectives are achieved through the most effective and realistic strategies.
  • Provide appropriate and timely advice, background information and briefing materials to Board members in carrying out their range of governance responsibilities.
  • Ensure the Board is kept abreast of all relevant information regarding the Chamber’s activities both locally and within the chamber network.
  • Provide support to each of the Board’s committees to enable them to function effectively and efficiently in fulfilling their governance responsibilities.
  • Attend all Board meetings and provide excellent and timely reporting documents; serves as a resource and advisor.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding Board matters that require privacy.


Member Relations
  • Develop and maintain direct, personal contact with members and build productive and sustainable relationships.
  • Pursue new ways to deliver value to the membership using technology, digital media and new innovative approaches; and
  • Carry out communications and networking engagements in support of special events and fundraisers to assist with the development of new opportunities and awareness.
  • Ensure the organization understands the education needs of its members and delivers and develops programs to meet those needs.

Member Programs and Services
  • Conduct affairs in accordance with commonly accepted ethical practices, consistent with the Chamber’s Vision, Mission and Core Values and the policies of the London Chamber of Commerce.
  • Oversee, plan, organize and direct all facets of the Chamber’s operations within the approved strategic plan framework to ensure the strategic and operational goals and objectives are achieved in each of the core operational elements of the organization.
  • Ensure the member services and programs provided by the organization are managed efficiently and effectively in support of the achievement of the strategic and operational objectives defined in the organization’s strategic plan.
  • Explore, develop and implement new membership programs that support the general activities of the organization on an on-going basis.
  • Create and organize events and identify opportunities for sponsorship attraction and retention.

Communications
  • Develop and maintain an open, diplomatic relationship with the media in order to keep them informed about the Chamber’s activities, while adhering to the Chamber’s communications policy.
  • Oversee any and all communication from the London Chamber of Commerce on any matter; including, but not limited to, all speeches by officers, all media releases, all publications and marketing materials.
  • Serve as the official spokesperson for the London Chamber on public policy positions and Municipal, Provincial, and Federal advocacy positions in the media, including digital, print, radio, and television.


Strategic Planning and Implementation
  • In collaboration with the Board of Directors of the Chamber, the management team and other staff, key constituents; oversee the implementation of the Strategic Plan and monitors its progress.
  • Enact the vision of the board, driving revenue through membership growth and retention while serving as the voice of business for the London business community.
  • Prepare a semi-annual analysis of progress in achieving the objectives established in the Strategic Plan establishing the rationale for variances and recommended modifications to the Plan for the remainder of the year.
  • Ensure achievement of the key objectives in conjunction with the Board.

Annual Financial Plan
  • In conjunction with the Board Chair and Executive Committee, formulate and recommend to the Board an Annual Budget for the Chamber that will support the achievement of the objectives established in the Strategic Plan and is consistent with the organizational policies.
  • Establish an annual list of performance objectives (within the context of the strategic plan) to be achieved by the CEO in the forthcoming year.
  • Conduct analysis of progress in achieving objectives set out on a periodic basis.
  • Implement effective administrative systems to ensure the efficient utilization of the financial resources of the organization within the objectives, policies and plans and budgets established by the Board.
  • Utilize sound financial management strategies to develop and administer the budget.
  • Provide, to the Board for its review and approval, the audited statements for the end of the fiscal year.

Financial and Administrative Management
  • Through the Hon. Treasurer, implement effective administration systems to ensure the efficient use of the Chamber’s financial resources within the objectives, policies, plans and budgets approved by the Board.
  • Ensure the implementation of appropriate internal audit, financial management, information and record keeping systems which are considered satisfactory by the Board’s approved external auditors.
  • Ensure monthly and annual financial statements are prepared and are consistent with generally accepted accounting principles.

 

Risk Management
  • Identify principle risks and review them with the Board, with recommendations of system implementations that will mitigate and manage risks.
  • Assess potential threats to the organization’s image and risks to the organizations financial security and growth.

Organization and Management Staff
  • Develop, for the approval of the Board, an effective organization structure that reflects the strategic direction and operational needs of the organization, and prescribes the authority and responsibilities of staff as they relate to the accomplishment of specific objectives and priorities.
  • Ensure an effective performance management system is in place for all employees.
  • Determine appropriate level of staffing required to achieve organizational objectives, as approved by the Board.
  • Oversee all staff recruitment, selection, training, supervision, evaluation, reporting relationships, remuneration, including benefit entitlement, and disciplinary action pertaining to any employees, up to and including termination, if /when so required.

Human Resources Leadership
  • Develop and oversee progressive human resource policies and programs that contribute to employee motivation and development and support the Chamber’s ability to hire and retain quality staff.
  • Provide strong and effective leadership to staff in order to capitalize on the full potential of this critical resource.
  • Communicate, motivate, guide and direct all those involved to contribute fully to the realization of the vision, mission, goals and objectives.
  • Maintain high visibility through the organization and remains focused on effective two-way communication with all personnel.
  • Act as a sounding board for ideas from staff and provide constructive comments and encouragement.
  • Implement and review a succession plan and management development process annually with the Board, ensuring the succession plan provides a plan for the emergency replacement of the CEO in the event of a sudden loss of chief executive services.
  • Provide the Board, at Board and committee meetings, with exposure to the Chamber’s key members of management.


External Relationships
  • Maintain effective working relationships with and communicate with the Chamber’s members, the community and other key stakeholders.
  • Maintain a position of the highest credibility, integrity, impact and communication with partner groups and business, community leaders and political leaders in order to facilitate enhanced relationships and understanding of the London Chamber of Commerce.

Qualifications
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in business or public administration. A suitable combination of education and experience will be acceptable.
  • Entrepreneurial business experience and knowledge of associations and membership-driven organizations would be an asset;
  • Minimum of 10 years of senior management and leadership experience.

Skills
  • Proven experience in business planning and working with multiple stakeholder groups and partners, government agencies, and community relations.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, business development success through to planning and implementation of strategies.
  • Technology-savvy; experience using social media (conversant with new media trends and management)
  • Demonstrated skills in human resource development, team building, and performance management.
  • A clear understanding of issues facing London businesses and a broad knowledge of industry acumen, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
  • Exceptional communication abilities, such as writing skills and public speaking/presentation skills with shareholders, communities, potential members, elected officials, outside organizations, media outlets, and the Board of Directors (ability to engage and work with media, prepare and deliver news releases, and speeches for Chamber events)
  • Critical thinking, an entrepreneurial and collaborative mindset and a member-focused approach
  • A dynamic leader with the ability to manage current programs while developing new initiatives and partnerships with other business and community organizations to achieve regional goals and objectives.
  • Proven ability to advocate to various levels of government (federal, provincial, and municipal politicians and bureaucrats).
  • Act as representative for business owners and employers in the community, building trust and cultivating relationships.

Compensation
A competitive compensation package will be provided. Further details will be discussed in a personal interview.
Some travel within Ontario is required; however, at this time, no travel is expected of Chamber employees due to COVID-19 restrictions.
