We are now accepting applications for Communications Operators in anticipation of upcoming vacancies at the end of 2024 & 2025.

Position: Communications Operator
Status: Temporary, Full Time

Salary:  $89,785 (Starting) - $108,609 (30 months) 

Position Summary

Communications Operators receive 911 calls from members of the public and other agencies reporting emergency and non-emergency occurrences within the City of London and initiate the response of Police, Fire, Paramedics and/or other City services. Callers are often involved in stressful and life-threatening situations and Communication Operators respond in a professional, empathetic manner and act accordingly.

Responsibilities

  • Gather, analyze, triage, document, and communicate critical information in Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) software and verbally in relation to emergent and non-emergent calls that may range from, but are not limited to, crimes in progress, assaults, fatalities, attempted suicides, collisions, medical emergencies, fire incidents, and robberies.
  • Communicate with callers in distress and attempt to verbally de-escalate situation.
  • Triage calls based on urgency, update call notes when new information is received (i.e., weapons, injuries), and determine when to upgrade call urgency.
  • Dispatch officers to prioritized calls for service while ensuring adequate sector coverage and communicate all pertinent information to maintain officer and public safety.
  • Maintain communication with patrol officers and other members of the London Police Service (LPS) by voice or data.
  • Transcribe data from officers to the CAD screen to document pertinent information.
  • Contact support agencies (i.e., EMS, Fire, etc.) and relay pertinent information requiring them to attend calls for service.
  • Notify a supervisor for all major calls for service, officer safety concerns, calls requiring media notification, equipment malfunctions, and any other situations requiring a supervisor's attention.
  • Notify all appropriate emergency and support agencies of pertinent information with respect to street closures, blocked railway crossing, severe storm warnings, and any other situations as required to ensure public safety in a timely manner.
  • Maintain awareness that actions directly affect safety of officers, other first responders, and members of the public, and errors in coding calls or communicating information impacts on others’ ability to respond/resolve situations and officer and public safety.
  • Other duties as assigned within the core competencies. 

Requirements

  • Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 6-12 months’ related experience.
  • Excellent communication skills, tact, discretion, and persuasion required for emotionally charged/potentially volatile situations on a regular basis.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and judgement required for decision making with problems or situations that deviate from straight-forward procedures on a regular basis. 

Hours of Duty: 

Rotating 10 and 12 hour shifts; days, nights, weekends, and holidays. 

Benefits: 

Temporary members receive ten percent (10%) of their hourly rate in lieu of benefits (after 120 calendar days) and are also eligible to join the OMERS Pension Plan upon their first day of hire.
