The Opportunity

Reporting directly to the General Manager, the Senior Materials Manager will provide strategic leadership and oversight of the sourcing, negotiation, and procurement of steel products essential to Steelway’s custom manufacturing operations. The successful candidate will lead the development and execution of procurement strategies, manage key supplier relationships (primarily Canadian-based), and ensure optimal performance in cost, delivery, and inventory management.

This role offers an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned steel procurement expert to bring thought leadership, guide a stable and collaborative team of 4–6 professionals, and contribute to the success of a proudly Canadian, just-in-time manufacturing operation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mill-direct procurement for coil, plate, and structural steel materials
  • Build and sustain strategic supplier relationships with mills, processors, and service centres
  • Navigate steel market volatility using indices such as CRU and global insights
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, engineering, and sales to align procurement with business needs
  • Support the implementation of Epicor ERP and lead enhancements to procurement processes
  • Provide mentorship and direction to a high-performing procurement team

Required Qualifications

  • Highly experienced in mill-direct steel procurement, with a deep understanding of coil, plate, and structural steel sourcing
  • In-depth knowledge of steel indices and market trends (e.g., CRU)
  • Proven ability in strategic sourcing, supplier negotiations, and cost control
  • Proficient in ERP/MRP systems (Epicor experience is an asset)
  • Familiarity with just-in-time manufacturing environments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Business, Supply Chain, Engineering, or a related field
  • Established network with mills and service centres; supplier diversification expertise
  • Experience mentoring or leading purchasing teams
  • Awareness of sustainability and responsible sourcing trends

Why Join Steelway?

  • Work with a strategically minded, non-micromanaging General Manager
  • Be part of a locally focused and stable business with national impact
  • Enjoy autonomy, cross-functional collaboration, and the opportunity to shape procurement strategy
  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits including RRSP, profit sharing, and wellness perks
  • Relocation support available for the right candidate
