Job Description
Job purpose
The Safety and Compliance Coordinator plans, designs, develops, implements, and evaluates companywide occupational safety and compliance programs within multiple divisions and/or departments (both Federal and Provincial), with guidance from the Human Resources Director.
Duties and responsibilities
- Initiate, promote, implement and maintain health and safety projects and initiatives
- Maintain awareness of amendments to Canada Labour Code Part II (CLC) and Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) and Regulations, MTO, US DOT and make recommendations for their implementation
- Design safety standards to conform to industry standards, federal, provincial and local regulations
- Develop and conduct occupational safety training for various workgroups, including evaluation and modification of programs to meet local, provincial, and federal OHSA requirements
- Coordinate inspections, investigations, and occupational safety activities with departments and Joint Health and Safety Committee
- Research occupational safety information to ensure the best available methods and equipment are adopted to minimize the hazards in the work place
- Ensure the timely completion of accident/injury reporting to Corporate Office
- Advise on improvements in tracking and reporting procedures
- Provide guidance to less experienced occupational safety personnel
- Research, plan, organize and conduct training programs/ seminars for supervisors, employees and visitors, with regard to Orientation, WHMIS, Personal Protection Equipment, CPR/First Aid, industry specific related issues, etc. as required
- Provide advice and counsel to employee groups on a broad range of occupational safety issues and decisions
- Responsible for monitoring adherence to the company safety program by all employees and visitors
- Perform job site safety compliance inspections including hazard analysis, safe work procedures, written reports and recommendations
- Prepare Health and Safety Committee Meeting minutes monthly, distribute as required, and follow up on all points to ensure matters are resolved in an appropriate and timely manner
- Coordinate health and safety supplies by ensuring appropriate supplies are identified and purchased in a timely and cost effective manner
- Monitor usage of supplies and identify inappropriate use, and respond accordingly
- Provide regular and accurate statistical reports on all medical aid, WSIB incidents and injuries, lost time/ no lost time injuries
- Maintain Health and Safety bulletin boards
- Maintain records of all Health and Safety related training in individual employee files and company-wide logs
- Conduct monthly departmental safety audits, with assistance from the Health and Safety committee member of that department, and report on results
- Investigate accidents thoroughly and effectively, and then respond appropriately as required, including communicating to, training and following up with supervisors and employees
- Support and promote Human Resources department initiatives and provide assistance
- Periodically act as a team leader to special task forces or teams
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Post-Secondary Diploma or Degree in a related field (CRSP is considered an asset)
- 3 years' experience in an occupational health and safety role (background in transportation industry and asset)
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of the OHSA, Canada Labour Code Part II and Workers' compensation legislation
- Attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy
- Strong knowledge of and dedication to safety regulations and best practices
- Strong English communication skills (both verbal and written)
- Proficiency with database applications and administration systems, specifically Microsoft Office
- Must be a highly motivated, service and team-oriented individual
- Excellent organizational and planning skills
- Able to identify key issues; creatively and strategically overcome internal challenges
Working conditions
Fast-paced environment; Travel between facilities; Ability to attend and conduct meetings; overtime may be required;
