Summary of Duties

Reporting to the Supervisor of the Apparatus Division, the Mechanical Technician is primarily accountable for performing mechanical service duties related to the maintenance of Fire service equipment such as SCBA, Breathing Air Compressors, and Rescue Equipment both Hydraulic and Air operated; however, the incumbent will also be accountable for Quantitative Fit testing and HazMat Suit Maintenance, all doing so in accordance with Corporate and Fire Services policies, Standard Operating Guidelines and standard practices in the Apparatus Division.  The Mechanical Technician will work in close cooperation with members of London Fire Department (LFD) Apparatus Division and Clerical Administrative Division to deliver high quality services to internal customers while ensuring that sensitive matters and restricted information are kept confidential.

Work Performed

General

 
  • Conduct all duties and activities in accordance with Corporate and LFD’s policies and Standard Operating Guidelines.

  • Report all unsafe conditions associated with equipment, or duties and activities.

  • Initiate timely evaluation, recommends, and initiates corrective action related to unsafe or hazardous situations.

  • Work will all staff to promote and advance an environment and attitude of accident and injury prevention

  • When directed, be involved with initiatives aimed at continually improving the quality of services provided by the Apparatus Division to internal customers, including but not limited to recommending quality objectives, process, and quality indicators.

  • Through participation in initiatives and/or committee work, the Mechanical Technician supports the achievement of corporate goals and objectives by providing feedback and input as requested.

  • Complete reports and forms as required, including Work Orders, ensuring the content structure, and accuracy meets LFD standards, with respect to content, structure, accuracy, and order in a legible and grammatically correct manner.

  • Ensure that all activities and duties performed meet the legislative requirements for and address all issues related to health and safety, and all other relevant legislation.

  • Attend applicable education and training activities when scheduled and approved, noting that the individual may be away for up to one (1) week at a time and, in some cases, longer duration travel may be required as well as weekend departure

  • Maintain confidentiality of all records and information.

  • When directed, will assist the Supervisor and/or the Training division to develop and deliver training programs related to safety and the proper use of equipment.


  •  

Mechanical Technician Duties

 
  • Inspects, repairs, and maintains SCBA, Air Cylinders, Breathing Air Compressors, and related equipment including CO Monitoring systems, ASME storage systems, and Wescodyne cleaning stations.

  • Maintains Air Exchange program for both SCBA and FD Aerial Ladders

  • Inspects and repairs and maintains all Hydraulic and Compressed Air Rescue Equipment including stabilization Strut assemblies.

  • Tests and maintains Haz Mat

  • Maintains O2 regulator stock and Calibration.

  • Performs Quantitative (QNFT) Fit testing to CSA Z94.4-2018

  • Maintains all related records, including inspection and inventory records; prepares reports and assists when directed with the development of related

  • Maintains Corporate Visa in accordance with Corporate and LFD’s policies.

  • Requisitions parts, supplies and equipment as required.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Successful completion of Grade 12 or equivalent

  • Demonstrated Mechanical Aptitude

  • Valid DZ driver’s license in the Province of Ontario

  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills using various software.


  •  

Specialized Training & Licenses

Assets would Include:                        

 
  • 345 Small Engine Technician in the Province of Ontario

  • Certificate- SCBA Certification Technician II from 3m/Scott Fire Safety

  • Certificate- Holmatro Factory Trained Certified Technician

  • Certificate- Ontario Certified Fit Tester

  • Certificate- Jordair Compressor Level 2 Training

  • Solid understanding of CSA Standards Z-94.4-18 & Z180.1

  • Haz-Mat Suit Testing and Maintenance

  • Visual Plus testing of Cylinders Experience

  • Paratech Rescue systems Testing and Maintenance Experience

  • Ability to successfully complete supplier courses and apply knowledge gained in the performance of duties.

Compensation and Other Information

Compensation Range: $66,711 - $92,369
