Note:  This is a full-time Administrative position (37.5 hours per week).


Duties:  Under the general direction of the Dean, Faculty of Creative Industries, with input from the Associate Dean, School of Design, the Manager, Fanshawe Gardens, is responsible for the effective operation, maintenance, and records of the College’s garden operations at the Oxford Street and Cuddy properties. With subject matter expertise, the Manager, Fanshawe Gardens, maintains and creates partnerships resulting in enhanced learning and functions/events. The principles of the Gardens are academics, community, and research.

The Manager, Fanshawe Gardens, will have responsibility for the day-to-day leadership of maintenance operations and records of all garden locations, including planning, supervising, and guiding non-academic staff to directly support garden maintenance and with academics, supports the garden learning environments for programs and students’ goals.

The Manager, Fanshawe Gardens, will educate and support BGCI Botanic Garden Conservation standards within College frameworks. The Manager, Fanshawe Gardens, is a key link between the College and the broader internal and external communities and plays a vital role in the identification of emerging trends and industry best practices and keeps informed of competitor college and university garden leadership models.

The incumbent will work closely with the Associate Dean, School of Design and the Manager of Facilities Operations, Custodial, Grounds and Support Services, within to ensure the achievement of garden maintenance; develop and maintain revenue targets; plant record keeping; control of non-academic expenses, and the Health and Safety of the enterprise and academic operations in London and Strathroy.

   
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Post-secondary 3-year diploma/degree in Garden Management, Horticulture, Environmental Design or related field
  • Minimum 5 years’ related, progressive work and leadership experience in several of the following: Garden Leadership, Ornamental Horticulture, Horticulture, Agri-tech, Greenhouse, and/or Botanic Garden environment conservation
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered; preference will be given to applicants meeting the education requirements
  • Experience with Botanical Gardens is an asset
  • Supervisory experience with strong leadership ability
  • Teaching or employment in a post-secondary environment is an asset
  • Solid skills and experience in human resource management, budget planning, forecasting, resource allocation, marketplace intelligence and a commitment to service excellence
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills along with client service skills and conflict resolution
  • Experience in establishing alliances with business/industry partners
  • Problem-solving, negotiating and project management skills also required
  • Ability and background to learn about and develop funded research projects
  • Related computer software experience
  • Garden and grounds supervision are an asset
