To provide effective financial leadership, services, information and stewardship in support of the academic, research and service activities of Western’s community. 

The Assistant Controller provides support to the Director and Controller in overseeing the financial accounting and control system for the University, and provides financial guidance and advice to senior staff of the University (AVPs, Administrative Officers, Financial Officers). The Assistant Controller will also develop policies and procedures for the financial administration of the University that implement best practices for financial management. This role works closely with the Financial Services team to deliver financial services to the University community and will act as a change agent for financial procedures and administration, evaluating the effectiveness of internal controls within Financial Services and the University. 

Qualifications

Education:
-   Undergraduate Degree in a related field (Finance, Economics, Business) 
-   Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) 


Experience:
-   5 years’ experience in an accounting role, managing financial reporting, taxation and compliance 
-   Experience in a public sector or educational institution is preferred
-   Experience with complex financial reporting and consolidations, including experience completing NPO financial statements is preferred


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
-   Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, financial statement preparation and their application to financial reporting for non-profit organizations 
-   Demonstrated commitment to ethical and moral values in support of the University 
-   Knowledge of control frameworks and proper control procedures, and enterprise-wide risk management 
-   Knowledge of the legal framework(s) and governance in which the University operates, and tax law including taxable benefits and indirect taxes as they apply to not for profit entities 
-   Good knowledge of tax regulations (Income Tax, HST)  
-   Working knowledge of PS Query, PS Financials and Caseware, visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI  
-   Ability to deal confidentially with information that has financial, political, regulatory and reputational implications 
-   Ability to prioritize and oversee multiple projects in a fast-paced environment 
-   Ability to make decisions and recommendations that are clearly linked to the organization's strategy and goals 
-   Ability to analyze exposures and make recommendations to decrease financial risk 
-   Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite, with knowledge of spreadsheet and database software and auditing strategies for financial transaction data 
-   Ability to demonstrate a high level of professionalism and to work effectively and efficiently with internal and external clients at all levels of the organization 
-   Ability to collaborate with team members to resolve issues in an effective and timely manner  
-   Strong negotiation skills to confer with different parties with vested interests
