Theatre Arts Technician

School of Contemporary Media                                     Location:  CitiPlaza Campus

Starting Salary:  $16.28 per hour                      

 

 

Note:   This is a part-time position (maximum 24 hours per week).

 

Hours of Work:  Flexible work hours except at times of productions.  Working conditions that are applicable to a theatre environment.

 

Duties:  Reporting to the Acting Chair, School of Contemporary Media, day-to-day direction is given by the Theatre Arts Coordinator.  The incumbent provides technical support to the Theatre Arts Performance program at the CitiPlaza Campus.  The incumbent is responsible for production and technical support for the Theatre Arts program as well as clerical and administrative support within the program (70% technical support; 30% clerical support).

 

Duties include:  

Technical expertise and assistance for production and labs, including:  ensure spaces, material, and equipment ready for learning environment and production venue.  Perform technical stage management and support.  Assist the coordinator to source and coordinate contract services (set, costume, light, sound and prop designers, builders, installers, marketing and publicity design).  Act as resource in all areas of Theatre performance and production, working with academic and production coordinators.  Research props (build/rent/buy).  Determine stage management needs for production.  Attends rehearsals.  Coordinate expenses with established budget.  Record keeping pertaining to productions and purchases.  Obtain performance rights for performance and coordinate payment of royalties.  Coordinate entire build of performances (set props, costumes, sound), meeting equipment, materials, and designs requirements.  Organize and oversee all students involved in setting-up shows.  Maintain and organize theatre space for shows and organize storage spaces.  Create schedules for shows and coordinate with class and workshops.  Supports health and safety requirements.  Performs other relevant duties, including some clerical functions, as assigned.  

 

Qualifications:   

§  Post-secondary 2 year diploma in Theatre Arts program preferred

§  Minimum 2 years experience gained from a technical theatre position required

§  Contacts and knowledge of professional and community theatre practitioners essential

§  Knowledge of set design and familiar with power tools

§  Strong budgeting skills an asset

§  Knowledge of film, video, audio and lighting equipment

§  Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office  

§  Excellent verbal and written communication skills

§  Strong interpersonal skills with an emphasis on team work

§  Strong troubleshooting skills

§   Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
