Research Assistant (Vision Screening) - 2 positions
Lawson Health Research Institute, St. Joseph's Hospital
Temporary Part Time – 9 hours per week
One year contract, anticipated to extend to May 31st, 2016, subject to the availability of work. The Ivey Special Eye Examination (iSee) program is a free vision screening program for young children in London, Ontario organized by the Ivey Eye Institute. Children will be screened at Ontario Early Year Centers, day cares, nursery schools and child care programs across the city. The successful candidate will work under the direction of Dr. Inas Makar, Pediatric Ophthalmologist and the Program Coordinator to screen for vision disorders in children using a portable photoscreener and consent children for participation in the research aspects of the program.

The position is responsible for the consenting of children (parental consent), conduct of successful screening sessions within the city and providing support to volunteer screeners. The program has two aspects; first, it provides service to the community by identifying children who require more detailed ocular exam and second involves clinical research relevant to photoscreening in preschool children. The successful candidate may also be required to organize data obtained within databases for future research needs and publications.

Essential Qualifications
* Experience working with young children
* People management experience.
* Creative problem-solving skills and sound professional judgment, especially regarding confidential/sensitive matters
* Ability to work in fast-paced environment, be flexible, meet tight deadlines, and adapt to growth and change
* Strong interpersonal skills as well as excellent communication skills (oral and written)
* Self-motivated, able to multi-task with strong organizational skills
* Strong working knowledge of MS Office, including record management systems and databases.
* Valid Ontario driver's license required
* Strong time management skills and the flexibility to meet shifting requests 
* Experience with public service announcements and media related activities
 
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
* Knowledge in Ophthalmology.
* Current university or college student
* Experience in clinical research environments, especially consenting participants for clinical studies. 
* Experience working in a volunteer environment.
