About Us
University Machine Services (UMS) is an ancillary service located in the Thompson Engineering Building at Western University. UMS provides assistance in instruction, research, and industry through the design and manufacture of specialized components and equipment. Staffed by dedicated trades and technical employees, UMS is equipped with a wide range of conventional machine tools and is capable of producing a wide variety of products and equipment.
Responsibilities
The Machinist is a primary resource in the University Machine Services (UMS) shop who possesses expert abilities in machining and/or other manufacturing processes enabling them to design, manufacture, maintain and troubleshoot an array of parts, products, and equipment at the highest technical skill level. The role will develop products using standard machining and manufacturing equipment or dependent on the individual’s expertise, will be required to use sheet metal, fabrication and welding equipment, additive manufacturing equipment, QA equipment, or other specialist equipment and skills as used by UMS. In addition, the role will work with SolidWorks, CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) machines, 3D additive technologies, advanced welding/fabrication, and/or other technologies to produce a variety of specialized parts or equipment under the direction of a shop manager or project manager, ensuring all requirements are completed and delivered in a timely fashion.
Qualifications
Education:
- 2 year Community College Diploma in a technical program
- Certificate of Qualification as a General Machinist, Tool & Die Maker or related program
- Completion of a registered apprenticeship as a General Machinist or Tool and Die Maker is preferred
Experience:
- 5 years' trade experience (post-apprenticeship) as a General Machinist or Tool and Die Maker in a jobbing shop or prototyping machine shop environment
- Experience utilizing a variety of machining and manufacturing techniques
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and training in the operation of CAD programs (such as SolidWorks, and HSM Works) is required
- Intermediate proficiency required in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) required; knowledge of Global Shop software would be an asset
- Familiarity with reading and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings
- In depth knowledge of safe work practices, use of protective equipment, safe operation of machines, hygiene, and lifting procedures in a shop environment
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and TSSA regulations is required
- Ability to review details on documents, systems, diagrams and other information to ensure accuracy and proper interpretation
- A sound knowledge of numbers, measures and structures, basic math operations and understanding of basic mathematical terms and concepts
- Extensive knowledge of all manual machining equipment
- In-depth knowledge of all shop and engineering materials and the proper machining methods for each
- Advanced troubleshooting ability along with hands-on expertise in technical support
- Ability to stay within labour hours estimated by the Manager and or Project Managers and agreed upon at time of quote with the ability to communicate if estimate is inaccurate
- Ability to effectively use measuring tools related to trade (e.g. Vernier calipers, vernier height gauge, gauge block, micrometers, etc.)
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of multiple project teams
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills to communicate both internally and externally to UMS
- Proven ability to provide high-quality customer service with the ability to provide sound technical solutions in a timely manner
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to privacy regulations
- Ability to multi-task, maintain an organized and effective personal work environment, and to work in a fluid and evolving work environment with changing deadlines and priorities
