Job Description

Serving the greater London region, Fanshawe College is one of Ontario’s largest colleges with an international focus consisting of four campuses in London, Simcoe, St. Thomas, and Woodstock. The well-recognized educational institution serves close to half a million people with a promise to educate, engage, empower, and excite and provides flexible learning arrangements and experiential education opportunities for their students.

Fanshawe College has much to offer, including an award-winning faculty, excellent facilities, and helpful support services to ensure their students achieve their personal, educational, and professional goals. The College continues to plan for the future with a focus on strategic growth, expansion, and significant investment into program development and student success support in the commitment to mental well being and equality. As a result, the College is committed to searching for a Director, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) who will refine and enrich the organizational culture through the oversight of the EDI strategy for the institution. This compelling leader will represent the College as an informed spokesperson on equity, diversity, and inclusion to the external community; and establish collaborations and partnerships across the College to advance EDI within existing resources (i.e., Strategy, Institutional Research, Organizational Development and Learning, Student Services, International, Centre for Academic Excellence).

What You Will Do

As the Director, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) for Fanshawe College reporting to the President, you will oversee the development, design, maintenance, and sustainability of an annual EDI strategy in alignment with the College’s vision, mission, and strategic goals. As an influential, highly collaborative, and fearless EDI leader, you will adopt, implement, promote, and lead an anti-racism, equity, inclusivity, and social accountability strategy and plan that will unequivocally shape the College’s organizational culture/climate. In your pursuit to make a genuine difference for the students, faculty, and administrative staff at the College, you will provide visionary leadership, direction, and guidance to support College management while considering legislative changes, demographic, economic, and labour market trends at the municipal, regional, national, and global levels.

As a highly inspiring and engaging leader, you will work closely with internal and external stakeholders regarding EDI communication plans and educational/training programs to increase intercultural competency and awareness in the quest for a more diverse, respectful, equitable, and inclusive academic learning and working environment. To that end, you will proactively focus on removing systemic barriers and biases with empathy and diplomacy by supporting the review of all College policies, processes, and practices and also drive the collection of in-depth intersectional data to analyze and understand key contexts, manifestations, and experiences of vulnerable persons. As a result, you will successfully identify and recommend strategic solutions that specifically support the College’s students, including international students and students with disabilities, LGBTQ2S+, QTBIPOC, and other marginalized groups to advance the EDI mission and vision.

Additionally, you will provide guidance surrounding the talent management strategy for recruitment, onboarding, engagement, development, and succession planning to ensure the College’s foundational principles for equity and diversity are successfully embedded.

What You Will Bring

You are an educated Master’s level graduate with extensive training in related fields such as Equity Studies, Social Work, Social Sciences, Gender Studies, Women’s Studies, Race Studies, Indigenous Studies, or Cultural Studies. Your formal education is complemented by your robust understanding of Human Rights, legalities, and experience working with a code of ethics.

You are an equity, diversity, and inclusion subject matter expert imparting a deep understanding of best practices in EDI, derived from your successful experience creating and curating EDI strategies as well as the development, implementation, and management of associated education programs. Additionally, you are very accustomed to working across a large organization, coordinating and synergizing efforts with multiple stakeholders and driving institutional change. Ideally, you have worked within a complex public sector organization. In order to successfully implement EDI initiatives, you will have experience in project design and coordination focused on marginalized populations’ support and/or academic development, ideally both.

As a proven and empowering change management leader, you have several years’ experience developing and mentoring a high-performance team to execute and propel strategies forward. Your broad understanding of the dynamics of discrimination and cultural diversity - current issues and trends - will be critical to the vision and planning associated to this important role.

Your well-developed and informed background and experience, inclusive of a vast network, within Social Justice and Human Rights will be invaluable to the College and the EDI initiatives that you will set in place. Your professional and lived experience as a member of one or several marginalized groups coupled with your collaborative leadership style will set you apart as a distinguished teacher, coach, and mentor to empower underrepresented groups and communities to be seen, heard, and recognized without fear from bias.
