POSITION TITLE: Business Analyst
DEPARTMENT: Information Technology
REPORTS TO: Chief Technology Officer

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION:
The Business Analyst (BA) is accountable for the delivery of high quality, high value, technology solutions to Ivey stakeholders.  These solutions must satisfy the needs of a wide user base that can include both internal stakeholders (e.g., students, faculty, staff, alumni) and world-wide external users (e.g., recruiters, prospective students and customers).   In order to achieve successful delivery of a solution, the BA is accountable for: 
a) managing projects from inception through quality assurance (QA) to deployment 
b) conducting business analysis including requirements definition through quality assurance testing
c) planning and executing the solution’s implementation, training, documentation and ongoing support. 
d) acting as primary point of contact for business units requiring technology solutions
e) engaging with solution vendors  
 
The portfolio of a BA would include small and medium sized projects; participation in major projects would be under the guidance of a Senior BA.

KEY RESULT AREAS:

1. Project Management (for a given project, usually for a single stakeholder group)
  • Create, adjust  and execute project work plan
  • Coordinate and collaborate with user stakeholder team members
  • Break project into work packages with vendor and/or I.T.  developers
  • Assist in enforcement of project costs, standards and deadlines
  • Keep stakeholders engaged, informed and up to date.
2. Business Analysis (for a given project, usually for a single stakeholder group)
  • Elicit and define business requirements with stakeholders
  • Explore and recommend alternative solutions
  • Document functional specifications, system design and acceptance criteria
  • Perform QA testing and ensure issues are resolved in a timely manner
3. Solution Implementation (for a given project, usually for a single stakeholder group)
  • Plan implementation with all stakeholders (external and internal)
  • Execute final acceptance testing, training and documentation
  • Empower stakeholders to leverage technology solutions through ongoing coaching, training, consultation, documentation and support
4. Contribution to I.T. Roadmap of Products and Services
  • Interact with department operations staff and managers to bring forward project opportunities
  • Participate in collaborative priority setting for projects on the I.T. roadmap
 
MAIN ACTIVITIES:

ACTIVITIES WITH PRIMARY DECISION-MAKING RESPONSIBILITY:
  1. Elicitation and definition of business requirements and functional specifications for small or medium sized projects as assigned
  2. Project planning and execution
  3. Project QA and acceptance testing
  4. Engaging portfolio stakeholder to gain in-depth understanding of the business
  5. Recommending technology solutions for business unit process improvement
  6. Researching and recommending innovations in current product directions
  7. Documentation and customer training
  8. Workload balance between self and peers
 
ACTIVITIES REQUIRING CONSULTATION AND/OR COOPERATION:
  1. Participation in major projects
  2. Recommending technology innovation for business solutions
  3. Roadmap prioritization and commitments
  4. Vendor and 3rd party product final selection; product licensing and legal impact decisions
  5. Research in new product directions

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Computer Science or Business would be considered an asset
  • 3-5 Years in a role that encompasses:  Business Analysis, Quality Assurance, Documentation and Training, Project Management, Systems Design, Systems Support
  • Experience in an Agile Development methodology environment is highly desirable

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Demonstrated leadership of cross-functional project teams preferably involving technology solutions
  • Proven track record of business process analysis, mapping and documentation
  • Demonstrated design and documentation of functional requirements, use cases and acceptance criteria
  • Proven ability to evaluate 3rd party software against business needs
  • Solid experience in Business Data Modeling; demonstrated familiarity with SQL and relational databases
  • End User Reporting with tools such as Crystal
  • Track record of working independently as well as collaboratively, keeping all members and stakeholders well-informed about both positive and negative situations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; influencing and presentation skills
  • Lifelong learner with the drive to explore and adapt to new technologies
  • Capabilities to multitask and shift priorities as required
  • Advanced expertise in all aspects of the Microsoft Office Suite
