Job Description
The Produce Department Manager is responsible for ensuring that all objectives and goals of the department and store, as communicated by the Store Manager, are met and/or exceeded and for the day-to-day management of specific aspects of the department including ordering, merchandising, labour scheduling and customer service. The performance of the duties must ensure a quality service approach to all employees, customers and suppliers. All responsibilities must be performed in a manner consistent with the Farm Boy vision, mission, and the Farm Boy Way.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Ensure Farm Boy’s readiness-for-customers standards are maintained at all times
2. Manage department’s key financial results to maintain a contribution margin equal to or exceeding big budget and weekly forecast
3. Ensure the accurate receipt of all incoming department products, inspecting the items for freshness and quality, and reconcile products received with packing slips, purchase orders, invoices, etc.
4. Analyze and control product transfers, waste and spoilage
5. Ensure standards for cleanliness and procedures for proper sanitation are followed for all areas of the department including back room and coolers
6. Create a staffing schedule to leverage productivity needs of the department; and verify attendance and payroll records prior to sending them to the Store Manager or payroll department for processing
7. Train, oversee and assist staff in the proper preparation and rotation of product
8. Maintain a proper department inventory using the perpetual inventory control system; conduct weekly inventory
9. Create appealing and impactful displays; ensure product is cross-merchandised with other departments
10. Ensure procurement plan-o-grams are properly executed
11. Maintain accurate retail pricing and signage
12. Follow through on all customer questions and requests
13. Perform opening and closing procedures for the department and for the store as required by the Store Manager, and be on call for alarm system as designated
14. Organize and lead regular staff meetings and coordinate department activity ensuring that goals are properly communicated and attained >
15. Hire staff as coordinated by the Store Manager and according to the customer service standards and employee profile at Farm Boy
16. Ensure employee orientation, service standards and health/safety training is complete; follow-up with individual assessment of service quality, and coach for improved results
17. Foster employee development, motivation and recognition
18. May be requested to undertake other related duties on a periodic basis
STATEMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS:
- Typically requires completion of a post-secondary program with an emphasis in business, plus a minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible supervisory or management experience in a retail environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience

- Excellent merchandising skills and an eye for detail
- Ability to learn manual and automated systems/tools
- Good knowledge of retail industry and food products
- Skilled at handling complaints and communicating with upset, irate or irrational people
- Experienced in developing and coordinating work schedules for others
- Superior standards of quality
- Good judgment and decision-making abilities
- Experience in working with various computer software programs; e.g., Microsoft Suite
- Clear and effective communication style, both written and oral
- Skilled at working in a fast-paced environment while maintaining priorities and a high level of performance
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekend and holidays as required
