Position
The Accounting Manager reports directly to Chief Financial Officer.  The Accounting Manager shall hold responsibility for managing the overall financial operations of Western Fair District, and will provide accurate information to the Board of Directors, including analysis, budgeting, forecasting and preparing financial reports.  The Accounting Manager supervises the Accounts Payable Accountant & Money Room Manager and the Assistant Accounting Manager.  The Accounting Manager will be responsible for directing and managing the company’s accounting functions, including establishing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures as well as the preparation of financial statements and reporting to top management and externally. The Accounting Manager also maintains the company's accounting systems and implements changes as required.   Other key areas include posting all receipts and disbursements for the Western Fair District, The WFA Raceway Corporation and the Western Fair Sports Centre and reporting for each. 
 
Responsibilities of the Accounting Manager:
  • Manage the accounting operations of the organization including the entry and review of journal entries, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and statutory reporting.
  • Prepare monthly accruals and adjustment journal entries
  • Prepare operating budgets and forecasts.
  • Prepare, analyze and present regular financial reports and statements as required by the association and any related legislation.
  • Ensure adequate financial controls are in place and effective.
  • Supervise and monitor performance of related staff.
  • Manage cash flow of the Association.
  • Approve all wire transfers, EFT payments and bank transfers
  • Work with external auditors (KPMG, ORC, HST)
  • Prepare working papers, lead sheets and other year end documentation
  • Approve all payables processing (Cheques & EFTs)
  • Work with Accounts Payable to ensure purchasing policies are being followed
  • Maintain the general ledger
  • Prepare capital reports and amortization schedules
  • Calculate monthly commissions for sales staff to be submitted to payroll
  • Provide advice and guidance on all accounting matters including financial systems, record keeping, analysis and reporting
  • Responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of financial information
  • Suggest and implement new processes to improve the efficiency of WFD, both within the accounting and other WFD departments
  • Oversee WFD Gift Card program with Givex and other participating 3rd parties (Farmers Market, OLG)
  • Oversee merchant accounts and be the main contact with the merchant companies
  • Supervise Money Room functions, coin orders, and level cash on hand
  • Promote a positive work environment to encourage teamwork and positive energy
  • Hiring, training, mentoring and supervising accounting staff
  • Must comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Western Fair District Health & Safety Policy and Awareness Program/Safety Manual, all Western Fair District procedures and any other applicable legislation.
  • Responsible for following and enforcing all company policies within the department, dress code, conduct code, contract and agreement signing policy, purchasing policy and expense reporting policy. 
  • Other related duties as required or assigned.
 
Skills and Qualifications:
Post-secondary education in business
Possesses an accounting designation (CA, CMA, CGA)
  1. Years related work experience
Experience and knowledge of all aspects of corporate accounting and financial management
Experience overseeing audits performed by external audit firms
Financial analysis, budgeting and some strategic planning experience
Knowledge of accounting principles, practices and applications
Computer skills (especially Excel, Word, Microsoft Outlook)
Excellent Communication skills, both written and verbal
Good customer service and organizational skills
