London Heritage Writer – 30 Hours/Week – 7 Weeks – $11.40/Hour

First, a little about us. Founded in 2010, LondonFuse is a local non-profit organization located within 121 Studios (formerly Novack’s). Our purpose is multifaceted: to create, curate, and promote arts, culture, and heritage in London, ON through community involvement, our online content, and our paper publication Short Fuse. In addition, we provide volunteer and training opportunities to individuals in written content, photography, videography, and other new media disciplines.

Many exciting things are happening at Fuse right now: we recently launched our brand new website, Short Fuse is going strong, and the momentum is still going! We’re looking to grow and produce even more high quality, engaging, and educational content that’ll help others love London, ON just as much as we do!

Thanks to the Canada Summer Jobs Program grant provided by the Government of Canada, LondonFuse is hiring two (2) new employees for a 7-week term.

The Opportunity:

The London Heritage Writer will be expected to complete these specific tasks over the course of the term:

• Complete 2-3 local heritage-based articles each week during the 7 week term (Start date: June 5th, 2017)
• Contribute 1-2 pieces of local heritage-based content to each edition of our print publication, Short Fuse 
• Edit coworkers written work / collaborate on projects
• Write the script and storyboard one substantial educational, local heritage video pertaining to London’s history within Canada 150
• Compile a photo gallery of heritage “stock” photos for future use in LondonFuse projects Create a directory of community partnerships created within both written and video collaborative projects
• Collaborate with at least two existing LondonFuse contributors on at least one piece of heritage-based content 
• Other assignments as they arise

The candidates will encounter several rewarding and enriching experiences. Through the telling of local heritage stories and following this primary task list, the candidate will develop the necessary skills and attributes for working in the arts, culture, heritage, and content sector in the London, Ontario community (and beyond). 

The Qualifications:

• • Enrolled in a post-secondary program in History, Art History, English, Creative Writing, Marketing, Visual Art, Communications or a related field
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in writing for the internet is a must; experience in writing for print is a plus
  • Experience in photography, WordPress, and Adobe Creative Suite (PhotoShop, InDesign), and Final Cut is preferred
  • Experience in historical research and local means to do so
  • A passion for London’s history and desire to tell those stories
  • An ability to collaborate and engage in the creative process of developing ideas
  • Demonstrates integrity and positive ethics. Bonus points will be issued for those with volunteer experience, or a passion for making London a better place through your actions
  • Applicants MUST be enrolled in a post-secondary institution as a FULL-TIME student in the 2016/2017 academic year and will be returning as such for the 2017/2018 academic year.
