Job Description


The Department of Information Technology Services (ITS) is a central source committed to providing high-quality, cost-effective technology solutions and services to the campus community in support of the teaching and research missions of the University. ITS works collaboratively with other IT groups within Western's faculties and support units to leverage central supported technology solutions and services where appropriate.
 
The Technical Services division of ITS is responsible for providing Western faculty, staff, and students with the best possible hardware and software support infrastructure to enable the use of technology in teaching, learning and administration.
 
We are currently looking for an IT professional who will share responsibility for the support and maintenance of our central Linux and Solaris server environment. The System Administrator is a key member of a team responsible for the research, planning, designing, modifying, integrating and evaluating servers, databases, storage, and associated enterprise applications which form part of Western's central technology infrastructure. Servers and database systems may utilize different operating systems and/or database platforms dependent on the user requirements.  The central infrastructure collectively also consists of hundreds of terabytes of disk space.  For additional detail on specific technologies currently used at ITS, please see the Western ITS Technology Environment document.  (http://www.uwo.ca/its/services/WITE.pdf).
 
ITS systems' support many mission critical services including email, web services, our learning management system, voice services and other enterprise applications. Central services also provide web, server, database, and storage hosting for the Western community.
 
Qualifications
Education:
-   College Diploma in an information technology field or a university degree with at least a minor in Computer Science
-   University Degree majoring in Computer Science or an Information Technology field is preferred
-   Certification related to server administration, server virtualization, relational database, and/or storage management is preferred

Experience:
-   5  years' experience supporting enterprise level servers and supporting storage
-   Experience building and supporting recent versions of CentOS and/or Oracle Linux Systems
-   Familiarity with network concepts and administrative procedures in a large production environment is preferred
-   Equipment specific experience related to server hardware from multiple vendors is preferred
 
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
-   Experience building and supporting recent versions of Solaris systems would be an asset
-   Experience with Linux systems management solutions such as Spacewalk would be an asset
-   Experience providing technical leadership for small to medium scale projects
-   Experience maintaining strong security practices for servers and the data housed within an IT managed infrastructure
-   Experience in large scale data centers (with more than 100 servers leveraging  central  storage)
-   Working  knowledge of application and web engine deployment and experience working with relational databases
-   Experience supporting server virtualization technologies and with backup/restore technologies
-   Experience supporting engineered infrastructure solutions
-   Demonstrated proficiency in setup and management of server operating systems
-   Ability to provide technical guidance regarding infrastructure design, deployment and support for ITS services
-   Demonstrated familiarity with concepts around central directory services (such as LDAP and Active Directory)
-   Demonstrated proficiency with implementation and management of both local and shared storage such as storage area networks using multiple protocols
-   Demonstrated familiarity with relational database management
-   Demonstrated familiarity with server hardware platforms: both rack mounted and blade servers
-   Demonstrated familiarity with server virtualization technologies
-   Demonstrated ability to learn, develop and support scripts in languages such as Perl, PowerShell, Bash and/or Python
-   Ability to write clear, concise procedural and technical documentation
-   Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively interact with technical and non-technical users
-   Ability to resolve problems and escalate issues with suggestions for further investigation and options for consideration as required
-   Initiative to seek and share relevant information, opinions, and judgments
-   Demonstrated organizational skills including ability to manage multiple competing priorities working to tight time lines with appropriate supervision
-   Ability to handle frequent interruptions
-   Demonstrated ability to research/investigate issues and resolve problems
-   Ability to re-evaluate current procedures and suggest creative ideas for improvement 
-   Ability to establish and maintain relationships with peers, contacts with access to information, and key business partners
-   Ability to carry out work off hours as required independently with appropriate guidance and training
-   Ability and willingness to stay abreast of technological development and adapt efficiently to emerging priorities and changing work methods
-   Demonstrates awareness by providing client explanations for actions taken relative to customer requirements, needs, and industry trends
-   Critical thinking and discernment to assess and scope areas for improvement
-   Ability to support change initiatives by following new directions as directed
