Job Description

  • one temporary part-time position, 24 hours per week (up to six months)
 
The Sarnia Jail is looking for a cleaning professional to provide minor maintenance services in a large maximum security detention centre, with 100 remanded and sentenced male and female inmates.
 
What can I expect to do in this role?
 
You will be responsible for:
  • operating heavy duty industrial cleaning equipment
  • maintaining premises by cleaning, mopping, dusting, replenishing supplies
  • lifting and moving office equipment and furniture to allow cleaning
  • lifting and disposing of garbage
  • participating in inmate program implementation through positive communication with inmate cleaning crews
  • utilize special cleaning processes, methods and chemicals for infection control
 
Location: 700 Christina Street North, Sarnia, Ontario
 
How do I qualify?
 
Technical Knowledge and Skills:
You have:
  • demonstrated knowledge of cleaning methods and processes including industrial cleaning equipment to perform housekeeping duties
  • the demonstrated ability to use industrial cleaning equipment within an institutional setting (e.g. floor polishers, vacuum cleaners, materials to perform required cleaning and housekeeping duties)
  • demonstrated knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) for safe handling of cleaning chemicals
  • knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, security related practices and procedures to ensure compliance
 
Analytical and Problem Solving Skills:
You have:
  • the ability to determine which type of cleaning agent to use
  • the ability to plan daily priorities and tasks, recognize equipment problems, need for maintenance and repairs, deficiencies or shortages in supplies
  • the ability to recognize security breaches and workplace hazards and when to report problems to supervisor
 
Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
You have:
  • the ability to communicate in a positive and effective manner when participating in program implementation by supervising inmate cleaning crews and dealing with other staff
  • the ability to maintain cleaning supply records and write occurrence reports

Salary range: $20.59 – $22.22 per hour
