ABOUT ALUS

When established, ALUS Middlesex will be one of ALUS Canada’s 21 communities across the nation, and the eighth ALUS community in Ontario.  ALUS Canada, A Weston Family Initiative, is a national program dedicated to supporting farmers and ranchers who produce cleaner air, cleaner water, more biodiversity and other ecosystem services on their land, for the benefit of all Canadians.  With support from ALUS, local farmers and ranchers manage new and enhanced wetlands, native prairie, pollinator habitat and other projects on select acres of their land.  ALUS currently sustains more than 15,500 such projects, with 700 participants and 18,000 acres enrolled in the program nationwide.

ABOUT THIS JOB

As the Program Coordinator / Environmental Specialist you will play a key role in the success of the ALUS Middlesex program.  You have the drive to make it work, the knowledge essential to the role, and the people skills that inspire action.

During the critical startup phase and beyond, you will:

  • coordinate, conduct and deliver the work required to implement the ALUS Middlesex program;
  • deliver extension services by working closely with ALUS program participants and assisting them with activities related to delivering environmental services, developing ecological restoration practices, and implementing habitat creation projects and site management plans on their agricultural land;
  • report directly to the Chair, ALUS Middlesex Partnership Advisory Committee (PAC);
  • work closely with the PAC - plus liaise and network with other committees, supporters, researchers and the agricultural community;
  • assist with fundraising;
  • maintain internal database and mapping systems as they develop;
  • help develop and then deliver a timely and relevant communications program; and
  • provide administrative support including develop conservation agreements with participants, manage payment schedules, and maintain financial and other program records.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

  • Post-secondary education in Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Agriculture, or a related field, plus two years related experience; or an equivalent combination thereof
  • Practical understanding of ecological restoration and agricultural practices in southern Ontario
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Superior communications, administrative, negotiation and organizational skills
  • Experience managing and coordinating others
  • Experience operating trucks and basic forestry or agricultural equipment is an asset
  • Working knowledge of GIS software is an asset

REQUIREMENTS

  • Eligible to work in Canada
  • A valid Ontario Driver’s license
  • Willing to use your own vehicle for program travel (with mileage reimbursement)
  • Proficient in oral and written English language
  • Good physical dexterity and ability to work outside in variable terrain and weather conditions
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including oral, listening and writing skills
  • Proficient computer skills including use of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel
