Job Description

The Centre for Digital Philosophy (CDP) at Western University is looking for a software developer with strong expertise in front-end web development. Expertise with Perl, Grails/Groovy/Java, MySQL and Linux is also highly desirable. The CDP advances research and education in philosophy through technology. The CDP maintains and develops major online services used by philosophers, including PhilPapers.org. The centre also conducts Big Data research into the nature and evolution of philosophical debates.
The Web Developer will be responsible for the maintenance and further development of online services operated by the CDP, including in particular PhilPapers.org. The Web Developer will also be involved in all aspects of the development of new online tools and services to be used in research and education in philosophy. The appointee will be responsible for the entire development lifecycle for new modules and services.
Education:
- Community College Diploma in computer science
- University degree in software engineering or computer science preferred
Experience:
- Minimum two years' experience in web development
- SQL programming experience required
- Experience in Perl object-oriented programming an asset
- Experience in Groovy/Grails development or Java with Spring an asset
- MySQL experience is highly desirable
- Linux system administration would be an asset
Skills & Expertise:
- Excellent knowledge of web technologies (HTML, JavaScript, CSS)
- Knowledge of Agile application development
- Excellent oral and written communication
- Ability to work autonomously and take charge of all aspects of the Agile application development lifecycle from design to implementation
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative and follow through on work assignments
- Ability to provide solutions by using imaginative approaches where constructive thinking and innovation are required
- Ability to keep up with and implement best software design practices
