The Assistant Produce Department Manager is responsible for assisting the Department Manager in the accomplishment of their duties and responsibilities. Although the department manager is ultimately accountable for sales, labour ratios, hiring, disciplining and termination of employees, the Assistant Department Manager is responsible for focusing their efforts on the achievement of company, store and department goals and on managing the department in the absence of the Department Manager. The performance of the duties must ensure a quality service approach to all employees, customers and suppliers. All responsibilities must be performed in a manner consistent with the Farm Boy vision, mission, and the Farm Boy Way.

Major Responsibilities:
- Assist in coordinating department operations ensuring that goals are communicated to the staff and attained
- Provide superior customer service and deal with customer complaints or concerns
- Assist in organizing and leading regular staff meetings
- Practice and promote company policies and ensure compliance
- Foster employee development, motivation and recognition
- Schedule staff and verify attendance and payroll records
- Conduct daily inventory of product and place orders accordingly
- Assist in receiving all incoming products and inspect the items for freshness and quality and reconcile products received with packing slips, purchase orders, invoices, etc.
- Oversee and assist staff in the proper preparation of product
- Oversee the readiness of the department, the quality of the product for sale, the appearance of the counters, the appearance of staff and the cleanliness of retail areas at all times
- Ensure that all product is properly stored and rotated in the cooler area and in the retail area
- Work with the department manager in designing merchandising and store layouts
- Participate in pricing activities including:
- Conducting price comparisons with competitors
- Setting of prices
- Performing price changes as costs and prices dictate
- Correcting price anomalies
- Verifying signage
- Developing promotions
- Perform opening and closing procedures for the department
- Perform office and inventory management functions
- May be requested to undertake other related duties on a periodic basis
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Typically requires completion of a post-secondary program with an emphasis in business, plus a minimum of 1 year of supervisory or management experience in the retail food industry, preferably working with produce or fresh perishables, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- A passion for food retailing and people
- Superior customer service skills
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal and analytical skills
- Ability to learn manual and automated systems/tools
- Good knowledge of retail industry and food products
- Skilled at handling complaints and communicating with upset, irate or irrational people
- Experienced in developing and coordinating work schedules for others
- Superior standards of quality
- Good judgment and decision-making abilities
- Experience in working with various computer software programs; e.g., Microsoft Suite
- Clear and effective communication style, both written and oral
- Skilled at working in a fast-paced environment while maintaining priorities and a high level of performance
- Fluency in English and French shall be considered an asset
- Providing service to several people or departments, working under many simultaneous deadlines
- Required to stand and walk for long periods of time during shift
- Required to lift, carry or handle heavy objects
- Required to adapt to temperature changes on occasion (working on the retail floor as well as in coolers and freezers)
