Job Description
Due to the continuing growth of our Field Services business, Alpha Technologies Ltd. has an immediate opportunity for a full-time Field Service Technician (CATV RF) with experience in fiber splicing, RF node segmentation, and/or power supply maintenance. Based out of Southwestern Ontario, the Field Service Technician will perform work mostly in the local area but some travel (~50%) is still required.
Reporting to the Field Service Manager, the Field Service Technician supports Alpha’s three main service functions in Southwestern Ontario: Fibre splicing, RF node segmentation, and Power Supply maintenance. Ensuring customer satisfaction with our products and services will be critical to the revenue growth of the company.
Responsibilities include:
- Installation and servicing of optical nodes, trunk amplifiers, line extenders, splitters, couplers, and taps in various network locations.
- Installation, set-up and repair fiber optic and network equipment in various construction projects, existing long haul networks, and HFC networks.
- Installation, set-up and repair of Alpha power products.
- Perform network splicing, certification, circuit testing, fiber terminations and fiber audits.
- Respond to corrective network problems, performing effective and efficient problem analysis, rapid troubleshooting diagnosis and prompt repair of equipment to ensure service objectives are met.
- Perform cutovers (within maintenance window of 2:00am-6:00am) and upgrades on the network as directed by work orders.
- Test and troubleshoot products and service for proper diagnosis.
- Complete reports/paperwork and route to the correct parties in a timely, accurate and professional manner.
- Coordinate many activities on site including site surveys, cabling (electrical and optical), power, and equipment installation.
- Perform appropriate tests in most signaling platforms including small to medium sized PBX, DS-0 through DS-3, and OC-3 to DWDM and CWDM.
- Setup and balance aurora nodes, SA truck amplifiers and SA line extenders with proper EQ levels, RF pads, light pads, and sweep.
- Read and interpret RF designs and fiber designs.
- Test and maintain power supply cabinets including the power supply and batteries.
Credentials & Experience:
- Diploma or Certificate of Technology; or evaluate relevant experience
- 2+ years experience working in the field doing installation, maintenance, and repair
- Understanding of AC and RF flow within the network is required
- Fiber optic and coaxial experience preferred
- Red Seal Construction and Maintenance Electrician is an asset
- Ability to use fiber test equipment, OTDR, Spectrum Analyzer, Light Identifier, Power Source, etc.
- Ability to sweep coax network using Stealth Meter and to troubleshoot short circuits and open circuits using a multimeter
- Ability to core coax, install connectors, taps, splitters, and power inserters
- Ability to lift equipment/ladders up to 75lbs
- Ability to work at heights over 30ft.
- Ability to work off of and handle 32ft ladders
- Experience installing/handling batteries is an asset
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong English communication skills required (verbal and written)
- Strong computer skills using MS Word, Excel and Outlook
- Valid Driver’s License and ability to pull a trailer required; bucket truck experience is an asset
Work Environment:
- Normal schedule is Monday – Friday, with regular overnight travel required; shift changes between day and night, often with short notice
- On-call and after-hour support required including weekends and overnight shifts
- Willing and able to work outside in all, including extreme, weather conditions
- Ability to travel up to 50% of the time (valid passport required) using company-provided work vehicles
