YMCA of Southwestern Ontario was founded in 1856 and has over 200 locations from Goderich to Point Pelee, and Windsor to Woodstock. We are one of the largest not-for-profit providers of licensed child care in Canada and have over 100 school age programs across our regions. We also offer settlement services to newcomers, employment programs, mental health support, and youth programs. YMCA of Southwestern Ontario operates two overnight camps, one in Point Pelee National Park, and one on Beausoleil Island in Muskoka. We also have 15 Health & Fitness branches across Southwestern Ontario.

Employees and volunteers of YMCA of Southwestern Ontario are ambassadors for the Y both on and off the job. Position: Overnight Camp Counsellor
Location: YMCA Camp Queen Elizabeth, Beausoleil Island
Start Date: June 22, 2024
End Date: August 23, 2024
Salary: $400-425/week based on experience
As part of your total compensation:
• Receive a 1-year complimentary YMCA membership to our Health & Fitness facilities, and discounts on YMCA child care and camp programs
• Be part of a caring and supportive network of people to help each other succeed
• Complimentary access to wellness and counselling services
In this role, you will:
• Provide adequate and engaged supervision of all campers in your care
• Proactively manage emotional and physical risk for campers and colleagues
• Respond quickly and effectively to accidents and incidents
• Plan and deliver creative and skill-based programs for your cabin group and skill-based morning activities
• Bring creativity and inspiration into exciting programs and works to create new creative activities
• Adhere to internal policies and procedures regarding lifeguarding, waterfront, and boating activities
• Adhere to NL standards for lifeguarding
• Plan and lead safe, fun, and challenging outtrips
• Ensure that campers’ life needs are met on trip, including food preparation, campsite management, medication administration, and first aid administration
• respond when necessary to camper needs any time of day or night
• Maintain a consistently positive attitude, role models the YMCA core values and maintains a healthy lifestyle
• Be committed to diversity, equity, inclusion and building a sense of belonging
• Embrace and exemplify the Y’s core values
Other Job Details:
• This is a seasonal position and the successful candidate is required to live on site at YMCA Camp Queen Elizabeth for the duration of their contract in rustic accommodations.
Education and Skills Qualifications:
• National Lifeguarding
• Standard First Aid, CPR C
• Attendance at the CQE Training Weekend for New Staff (May 31-June 2) This is a paid and highly encouraged, but not mandatory, training.
• Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Position Screening
• Preferred Applicants: Fun and responsible individuals looking to focus on the needs of campers. Successful completion of CQE or equivalent leadership programs and/or one year of counselling experience
• Legally entitled to work in Canada
