SUMMARY OF ACCOUNTABILITIES:
 
The Manager, Fund Development is accountable for contributing to the achievement of the London Public Library (LPL) Purpose, “User First” Service Model, and Strategic Plan by providing leadership in the area of fund development to maximize library revenue opportunities. The Manager, Fund Development is responsible for planning and executing the LPL Infinite Possibilities Campaign, a capital project to revitalize the Central Library with a goal of raising $1,000,000 from the community of London.  Reporting to the CEO & Chief Librarian, he or she is accountable for spearheading the development, implementation and evaluation of an integrated fundraising strategy, business plan and associated budget aligned to the Library strategic goals and operational priorities.  The Manager, Fund Development is responsible for achieving and/or exceeding fund development revenue targets and other related metrics in order to increase philanthropy and ensure a vibrant and diversified donor base for London Public Library. This position is also responsible for identifying, researching and submitting grant proposals in order to maximize opportunities for funds that may be available to the Library.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

 
Fund Development Revenue Generation
 
  • Collaborates with the CEO & Chief Librarian and Senior Team in the development, implementation and evaluation of an integrated fundraising strategy, business plan and associated budget aligned to the Library vision, mission, strategic plan and priorities that will produce a sustainable funding base from sources such as individual donors, corporations, foundations and service clubs.
  • Develops and implements a compelling case for supporting the library through fund development by involving CEO, Senior Team, Library Board members, Campaign Volunteers, Staff and other stakeholders in order to communicate the value of supporting the Library’s services, the rationale of supporting specific programs and campaigns, and to garner assistance in accessing and stewarding key donors
  • Executes the fundraising strategy and campaign plan and achieves the desired financial targets and related metrics, inclusive of a vibrant and diversified donor base.
  • Effectively establishes and executes the campaign plan based on strategy and reviews and evaluates the plan to reflect market conditions and new opportunities. Manages and monitors the established budget, ensuring a prompt, effective action plan for negative variances.
  • Undertakes research activities such as surveys, best practices and other feedback mechanisms in order to plan, execute and evaluate specific aspects of fundraising programs and campaigns.
  • Designs and conducts training programs/information sessions for staff, volunteers and other groups in order to enhance understanding of fund development and create a culture of philanthropy.
  • Asks for and secures gifts from prospects for the Infinite Possibilities Campaign alongside the Campaign Cabinet. Leads the Campaign Cabinet to open doors, and drive the successful solicitation of major gifts to achieve a $1,000,000 goal ensuring collaboration and appropriate utilization of CEO and Board members to influence and maximize results.
  • Identifies, prepares, submits and tracks grant requests and proposals to potential funders such as foundations and government agencies. Prepares reports to funders as required.
  • Evaluates fund development programs and campaigns using appropriate criteria and methodology in order to produce accurate reports for effective decision-making.
  • Reviews and makes recommendations to the CEO regarding corporate policies relating to all aspects of fund development.
 
Donor Research, Prospecting & Cultivation
 
  • Develops a prospect list by identifying individuals and groups who have the capacity and propensity to give in order to qualify candidates for further research and cultivation efforts.
  • Analyses the prospect list using characteristics such as interest, values, giving history and relationship with the Library in order to identify gaps and select donors for particular projects.
  • Develops and implements a prospect rating system for giving potential to facilitate prioritization and fund development program planning.
  • Uses a variety of fundraising techniques such as face-to-face solicitation, proposal writing, direct mail, special events, etc. geared to different donor groups, with a focus on major gift donors. In addition, identifies and solicits other markets such as employees, LPL retirees and volunteers.
  • In collaboration with the Manager, Marketing & Communications prepares donor-centred fund development materials that align with the Library’s brand essence in order to influence and facilitate informed ongoing support.
  • Develops and maintains an accurate and meaningful database of community contacts and current and prospective donors using fundraising data management software.
  • Develops reports for internal use, including Board reports as requested and develops and delivers formal and informal presentations to a variety of internal and external audiences.
 
Donor Stewardship / Relationship Building
 
  • Initiates and strengthens relationships with all constituents through a systematic cultivation plan with a focus on the cultivation of new and former donors and new initiatives designed to educate and engage donors in meaningful ways, upgrade and recover former donors, and increase support of LPL over the long term.
  • Acknowledges and recognizes gifts in ways that are meaningful to donors and in compliance with Library policies and legal / regulatory framework.
  • In collaboration with the CEO and the Manager, Marketing & Communications, develops and implements a comprehensive communications plan in order to inform constituents and identified markets about the mission, vision and values of the organization, its value to the London community and make known its funding priorities and gift opportunities. Promotes a culture of philanthropy.
  • In collaboration with the Financial Services department, complies with all reporting requirements and regulations in order to demonstrate commitment to accountability and transparency.
  • Reports to constituencies the sources, uses and management of funds in order to preserve and enhance confidence in the organization.
  • Ensures that the intent of gifts is honoured so that the library is accountable and public trust is established and preserved.
  • Develops and administers the annual donor appeal campaign.
 
Management of Relationships with External & Internal Partners
 
  • Actively participates in the Senior Management team and collaborates with and provides solutions / support to achieve strategic goals and objectives.
  • Leads by example and demonstrates the organizational values in all professional and personal behaviours.
  • Leads and / or participates on London Public Library cross-functional teams to lend skills, competence and knowledge. 
  • Provides timely and relevant information to the CEO to keep him/her apprised of the quality and quantity of giving activity.
  • Builds effective, collaborative relationships with key business partners (Marketing & Communications, Financial Services, Volunteer Services, Senior Team) to develop solutions and facilitate concise, accurate, two-way and timely communication to internal customer groups, including problem solving and troubleshooting support.
  • Builds and maintains a visible presence in the community to build top-of-mind awareness of the Library and build solid, long lasting relationships.
 
Team Leadership
 
  • Creates a team environment which fosters and develops high performance and effective working relationships.  Acts as a change agent to positively encourage others and manage change.
  • Builds support for Library vision and departmental goals/objectives by communicating expectations and rationale and by monitoring and measuring work and outcomes.  Looks for daily opportunities to highlight the connection between overall strategy and day-to-day operational activities.
  • Manages the work and oversees the quality and standard of work, directly overseeing the work of direct reports.
  • Continually looks for opportunities to improve and maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the Department.
  • Manages and supports staff performance and development by:
  • Providing consistent communication, feedback, coaching and empowerment;
  • Working with staff to address/resolve performance issues;
  • Documenting performance and conducting performance appraisals for direct reports.
  • Creating development plans to build core competencies and personal effectiveness.
  • Working in collaboration with the Manager, Training & Development to ensure that there is a training model in place for the department and that staff participate in training
  • Builds teamwork and team effectiveness.
  • Celebrates department by taking opportunities to express positive expectations and feedback on an individual basis and through team celebrations; share successes with other parts of the organization as appropriate.  

Human Resources Management
 
  • Hires, promotes and transfers staff; disciplines, demotes and discharges staff.
  • Collaborates in the development and system-wide application of the institution's employee relations policies; ensures that such policies are applied.
  • Participates in joint union-management committees and collective bargaining process as assigned by CEO.
  • Keeps current on the provisions and interpretations of Library Board policy and the Collective Agreement and ensures that they are properly applied.
  • Performs the duties required of a supervisor under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
 
Other
  • Keeps current in the area of philanthropy and development through continuing education, attendance at conferences and workshops, participation in professional associations, and by reading professional literature to enable LPL to be an early adapter of key and appropriate fund development ideas, programs and processes.
  • Knowledgeable about current trends, issues, concerns and practices in philanthropy and fund development. 
     
     
QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Understanding and belief in the value of public libraries to the community.
 
Successful completion of post-secondary education is required. CFRE (Certified Fundraising Executive) designation or post graduate diploma in fundraising is an asset. Knowledgeable about current trends, issues, concerns and practices in philanthropy and fund development.
 
A minimum of three years’ experience with a proven track record as an accomplished fundraising professional is essential. Knowledge of the London, Ontario marketplace is an asset.
 
Demonstrated ability to develop and implement fund development strategies and campaign plans.
 
Proven success in a broad range of fundraising and fund development responsibilities such as prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major individual and corporate donors; annual campaigns; capital campaigns; sponsorships; fund raising events; and planned giving programs.
 
Experience working with a public sector or non-profit Board and community volunteers.
 
Knowledge of tax legislation related to charitable giving.
 
Excellent judgment and a high level of integrity, trustworthiness, and honesty.
 
Highly developed relationship building and influencing skills.
 
Exceptional oral and written communication and presentation skills, including public speaking ability.
 
Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office, Blackbaud's eTapestry or other CRM platform.
 
Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
 
An action oriented self-starter who incorporates creativity and innovation into job performance.
 
Previous supervisory experience in a unionized environment an asset.
 
Valid driver’s license and access to vehicle for travel.
 
Ability to work evenings and weekends is expected.
 
 
This is a temporary Full Time position that may continue up to 1 year.
