Job Description
SUMMER EMPLOYMENT
SYRIAN YOUTH INTEGRATION SUPPORT WORKER (1 POSITION)
SUMMARY: This is a summer position (30 hours per week). The Syrian Youth Integration Support Worker will work closely with LUSO’s full time Youth Support Worker to provide support with planning, development and implementation of various community based programs and activities geared for youth ages 11-19 residing in NE London. Specifically, the student will help support the needs of Syrian children and youth accessing programs.
Successful candidate must be available to start June 27th and commit to the full 9 weeks of employment. Candidate must also be flexible as some evenings and weekends may be required during the summer.
DURATION: Tuesday June 27, 2017 to Friday August 25, 2017 ( 9 weeks)
POSITION DAYS: Monday to Friday ( with shorter day Friday)
RATE OF PAY: $11.90 per hour plus mandatory benefits
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Specific Programs: Leadership, Cooking, Community Gardening-assist with all aspects of youth programming including planning and delivery. Programs help youth develop social skills, life skills and leadership skills.
- Outreach and Promotion- assist with promotion of programs, through various outreach activities in NE London.
- Community Events- provides support and assists with planning and delivering of various community events throughout summer of 2017 that engage community members in particular support the integration of newly arrived Syrian youth and their families as wella s events to celebrate Canada 150.
- Administrative work- assist with maintaining statistics for the various programs, including attendance, demographics, conducting program surveys etc.,
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Applicant must have been a full time student during the 16/17 academic year and must be returning to school on a full time basis in September of 2017.
- Applicant must be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration And refugee Protection Act and must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- International and Foreign students are not eligible for the positions (funding is provided by the Federal government of Canada)
- Applicant must be in a post-secondary program related to human and social services
- Previous experience working with children and youth
- Must be able to work with individuals of diverse backgrounds
- Must be organized, and have efficient work habits
- Possess good time management and problem solving skills
- Must be highly energetic, empathetic, creative and reliable
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
- Access to a car an asset
- Successful completion of a Police Records Screening ( at own cost)
- Second language A STRONG ASSET- In particular ARABIC.
PRIORITY WILL BE GIVEN TO THOSE SPEAKING ARABIC.
