The Centre for Digital Philosophy’s (CDP) mission is to advance research and education in philosophy through technology. The Centre maintains and develops major online services used by philosophers, including, PhilPapers.org. The Centre also conducts Big Data research into the nature and evolution of philosophical debates. The Centre is part of the Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Working with the CDP team, the Software Developer will be responsible for the maintenance of existing online services operated by CDP and will be involved in all aspects and stages of the development of new online tools and services to be used in research and education in philosophy. The Software Developer will work together with other developers that are part of CDP or other organizations to achieve project objectives. Key accountabilities of the role include: developing applications, modules and features following a user-centric Agile process; troubleshoot, maintain, debug and improve existing Perl and Grails-based applications and server environments.

Qualifications 
Education:
-   Two year Community College Diploma in Computer Science related field
-   University Degree in Software Engineering or Computer Science preferred

Experience:
-   Two years' experience in web development with a solid understanding of database programming
-   Experience in object-oriented programming in Perl, Java (with Spring and Hibernate), or Groovy/Grails with MySQL preferred
-   Broad experience with other languages and frameworks particularly Python and Ruby preferred
-   Experience with high-traffic, distributed web deployments, including software such as Cassandra, Memcached, RabbitMQ, and Apache Thrift preferred

Skills & Expertise:
-   Excellent working knowledge of web technologies (HTML, JavaScript, CSS)
-   Working knowledge of development management tools, particularly git
-   Ability to lead the Agile application development process
-   Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with technical and non-technical users
-   Ability to work autonomously and take charge of all aspects of the Agile application development lifecycle, from design to implementation
-   Ability to supervise more junior developers and work as part of a team
-   Ability and willingness to stay abreast of technological developments and apply best software design practices
-   Working knowledge of Perl, Java, Spring, Hibernate, Groovy, Grails, MySQL, and advanced web frameworks would be an asset
-   Working knowledge of Linux systems administration would be an asset
