Job Description

Job Posting

POSITION:         MBA Career Advisor, Student Performance Coaching

Career Management

Richard Ivey School of Business

REPORTS TO: Lead, MBA Student Performance Coaching Team

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION:

There are three critical channels for Ivey’s MBA students to access their first career roles out of the business school. These include:

i) Formal on campus recruiting is conducted by organizations that have historic relationships with Ivey and work with our Corporate Relations team to be highly visible to our student population. They not only place job postings on our internal online job board, but also interview and do other recruiting and branding events on campus.

ii) Standard corporate recruiting programs typically implemented by organizations that have not historically worked with Ivey and primarily may be referred by Ivey alumni. They tend to work with our Corporate Relations team to post a job on Ivey’s internal online job board. Their interviews and other events are typically conducted off campus.

iii) The “independent job search” channel is one where students need to strategize and be most diligent on implementing a specific goal orientated communications and outreach plan because typically, these industries do not hire or seek to hire business school graduates.

The role of the Career Advisor (CA) is focused on helping our MBA students develop and analyze their personal career strategy through coaching and communications support. The CA will utilize various tools and resources that are relevant to the students’ job search process and help them plan and implement an effective outreach and communications plan. The work with students includes goal setting and determining which of the three recruiting channels they will need to utilize to ensure a successful career placement, in the industry and firms of choice. The role of the CA is to plan, and run small group and individual meetings and workshops for the MBA population at high impact points throughout the program. This is to ensure that the students are well versed and ready to access these channels. While working with the Client Relations team, the coach is aligned with the Industry portfolio manager. The CA will ensure a deep understanding of the recruiting clients, their expectations and what performance is required by our students in this competitive recruiting environment if they hope to achieve their goals. In some cases, this may include leveraging Ivey contacts and external corporate partners to assist in running workshops and support programs. Being proactive in suggesting relevant programming is also a critical part of this role, given the high level of engagement with the student population and the feedback from the Client Relations and/or firms on the market and/or our students’ performance.

KEY RESULTS AREAS:

1. Deliver consistent, value-add service to the defined group of students who choose to align themselves with the advisor’s portfolio at various times throughout the year. This includes understanding student’s goals, helping to define their action plans and where they might be in the process of securing their roles of choice (goal setting, networking, resume/cover letters preparation, interviewing, signing the offer). To be effective the coach will need to:

§ Be recognized as a credible and accessible source of recruitment strategy information and advising by the MBA student population, this includes being current on the industry, offering actionable and relevant advice to the population and keeping boundaries that reflect a professional relationship.

§ Work with the Director, MBA Lead, Client Relations team, and other members of the MBA Student Performance Coaching team to build relevant programming to support the students in achieving their career goals.

§ Create a competitive advantage for our students through providing input on the timing, design and marketing of the comprehensive access points and resources that are available with the team in Career Management. This will include (but is not exclusive to) the entire student life cycle: i) Pre-Ivey programming (including workbook creation and delivery),ii) input and delivery into some of the MBA in- class programming, iii) resume and cover letter editing and creation, iv) small group clinics across all portfolios, v) drop in advising times and vi) hand on engagement with the client relations team.

§ Identify and deliver optimally timed coaching related services (individual and group coaching) that address the needs of the current MBA student population and those of industry professionals.

§ Work with the other MBA Career Advisors to play an active role in any career related assignment s and processes.

§ Utilize a variety of communication forums to be accessible, build an understanding of the value and support being created in the overall Ivey experience and to ensure students feel supported and understood at this stressful time in their career. Channels for communications may include in-class workshops, small group sessions, emails, online communications tools, social media (twitter/LinkedIn), partnership with student clubs, one on one coaching meetings and other, peripheral school related events.

§ Utilize the annual student survey, as well as additional student and recruiter feedback mechanisms implemented throughout the year, to measure and create change in programs or communications to ensure CM is recognized as a critical and positive part of the students’ Ivey experience.

§ Work with the MBA Admissions team to interview and market to prospective Ivey MBA students and to assess, add input and evolve the MBA admission’s interview process as it aligns with the needs of the multiple stakeholders.

2. Develop a strong level of partnership with stakeholders both within the Ivey community and external to enrich, deepen and diversify the suite of relevant services and resources offered by Career Management that ultimately enhances the MBA student experience at Ivey:

§ Effectively work with the Director CM, the Performance Coaching team, the Alumni Relations team, and the Client Relations team to design and launch critical alumni access programs that will contribute to our students’ success in landing successful placements in industry roles.

§ Work with select professional student clubs and the Client Relations team to determine what training and development and contact with alumni would best move their industry knowledge and their ability to communicate it. This is an important strategic element as strong performance from our students against other MBAs has the potential to stimulate demand for more Ivey MBA students.

§ Work with Client Relations team to define appropriate business review and corporate information sessions to attend in order to be well versed on industry, company and functional roles and to be accessible to the partners and students that are critical to the department’s success.

§ Partner and collaborate with multiple stakeholders such as organizations, business schools, and industry professionals to further programming initiatives that are relevant and add value which will require significant input from others.
